My sister has been suffering from treatment resistant schizophrenia. Recently she started taking ivf treatment, thus stopped taking a medication (clozapine). But recently she started acting very aggressive and can?t recognise me and my mom, and always act weird and aggressive towards us. We have consulted a psychiatrist who prescribed her with sizodon 4 mg. She is reluctant to take the medications and behave aggressively towards us, if we try to give her the medicine. Sometimes she shouts and says delusional things. Please suggest what should we do, as we are also scared that the prescribed medication can harm her ivf treatment. Thank you.

Pregnancy is anyway stressful. It is ill-advised for her knowing her condition to stop the medication. Now she has kind of lost it and is refusing to take the medication. You should stop the ivf and do not pursue it until she is certified 'recovered' which may take a long time. Right now her priority is to come back to normal through the medical intervention. If you consult the psychiatrist, s/he will recommend some medication that can be mixed in her food or liquids so that she becomes amenable to take her regular medications. Please do this immediately. I also suggest that she goes for counseling for a long time since there is already resistance and her mind needs to be guided by an agreeable therapist. Anyway, this condition cannot be treated with medication alone. Please consider her pathology serious enough that you must follow doctor's prescription and therapy to get the best results.

Since she refuses to take oral medications, you can request your psychiatrist to give her injections that are available as depot preparations (once injected it will work for a few months) which will be of immense help in managing the situation better. And of course, her ivf treatment along with this injection can be closely monitored by your doctors in order to minimize the impact of side effects, if any.

Hello Lybrate user, need to consult the psychiatrist & discuss about the current symptoms of the patient. Need to get admitted in the hospital till the symptoms will under control & then do regular intake of medicine & regularly follow up with psychiatrist. Never ever stop the medicines if patient feels good. If we stop the medicines ,the disease will occur same like before after some period of time so please not to stop the treatment.in psychiatric disease need to do regular intake of medicine is necessary & important too. Hello, It seems that the diagnosis of schizophrenia has been confirmed and she has placed on medication. there is an urgent need for her to continue the medication and schizophrenia needs to be controlled. IVF can be carried out at the same time. But remember that medication for schizophrenia is must for her. there is no definite proof as yet that resperidone can harm the fetus and it shouyld be used as the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to fetus
