I am not diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I am recently diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder (most recent or current manic) along with the symptoms of grandiose delusions (according to the psychiatrist, I believe myself I am god). I am not diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder but I had taken olanzapine (increased to 5 mg dosage) and this drug is used to treat schizophrenia but as prescribed by psychiatrist, I was taking olanzapine not for schizoaffective disorder but for bipolar disorder along with delusions. Another psychiatrist from Lybrate platform told me that, "you might be suffering from schizoaffective disorder, and it requires immediate action of a doctor. Consult a psychiatrist as soon as possible. So, does this mean that I am diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder or suffering from schizoaffective disorder? If I really have schizoaffective disorder, then who will marry me? It's better to commit suicide as schizoaffective disorder is the most critical psychological disorder. Does the psychiatrist indirectly told me that I am having schizoaffective disorder in the form of bipolar 1 disorder along with grandiose delusions symptoms?

Hello, it does not matter if you have bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder as treatment for both these disorders is almost same. Moreover, these days we have such good medicines that the person with this illness can lead a life as good as normal person, provided he/she takes the medication as prescribed by psychiatrist p.s. Though the medication need to be taken for prolonged period but the maximum number of medicine that is required to be taken is 2 or in rare cases 3 only.

Both schizoaffective disorder and Bipolar disorder can have manic symptoms as exhibited by you. Olanzapine is used in treatment of both. Both can be treated well and you can achieve near normal living on regular medications, say like diabetes or hypertension. There is thin line of separation between the 2 disorders and basically it is how the neurotransmitters in the mind (brain) get altered, which causes the disturbance. So rather than brooding about the illness, take treatment and live your life to the fullest and being productive. Good luck.

Dear xaviour, diagnosing without consulting you in person and taking a longitudinal history from you and your family, takes time. It can not be done by Lybrate or telemedicine alone. Psychiatrist may diagnose you as? Schizoaffective or? Bipolar 1 disorder depending on the presentation cross sectionally. Anyway marriage is not prohibited whether you suffer from schizoaffective or bipolar 1, if you are taking treatment and maintaining well. Take treatment regularly and don't get too many consultations.
