Hysteria is an old term and no longer used in psychiatry. The word today is conversion disorder. This means that an underlying emotional conflict presents as a physical problem. So for example a person may get convulsions like attacks, but on testing they are not seizures, but pseudo seizures. In childhood that person may have had a sexual abuse which now surfacing in this form.
