Hi doctor, I'm scared of darkness. I mean I'm scared of going into a room without light or in a isolated area. As a part of this, even it is hot, I'll use my blanket when I sleep. That'll make me feel protected. I'm scared of things like ghost I don't know whether it exists or not. Lol. But I'm scared. Till now I didn't see anything strange in my life. But I've a inner fear. All I've watched is some horror movies. I know it sounds funny. But I'm curious to read a doctor's reply.

We all have some or the other phobias. Fear of the dark is one of the relatively common ones, just as fear of height, dogs etc. It would make more sense if you could isolate a single instance from childhood when you can remember being scared of the dark the first time. This can help in therapy. Also, seeing horror movies is not for all, as some faint hearted people may be frightened for days on end. You can avoid this certainly. Do you wish to be able to sleep with lights off? that may require some intervention. If it isn't causing any major problem then its nothing to worry about.

I would like to add that we have treated various case like this through homeopathy with good results. You should definitely avoid watching horror movies. Ghosts do not exist and even if they do they can not harm those who are strong willed. So start doing some pranayama and meditation. You can also wear a god (whoever you believe in) pendant which will help you feel safe. Sometimes hanuman chalisa also helps greatly.

Firstly please try to fear the social animals rather than the thing which do not exists (ghost). Secondly I believe - you are brave enough to cut down the fear and come out as a bold person. I suggest watch more scary/horror movies with your family members/friends and make the fun out of that (what an acting the actor is performing) - its so simple.

Your fear of isolation and darkness could be coming from a past scary experience of your childhood. If your fears are overwhelming and create an obstacle in daily living and doesn't let you lead a life of your choice then you could undergo counselling to manage and reduce your fears. Counselling can help you modify unhelpful thoughts attached to darkness and isolation and replace them with helpful thoughts which will bring hope and confidence. All thoughts are linked to certain feelings and emotions which lead us to behave in a certain way. If we change our thoughts and plant healthier ones, then we can manage our emotional disturbances and upredictable behaviour. But if it doesn't cause you a hindrance then let it be. Just enjoy your horror movies and have fun. All this is a part of growing up.
