I was diagnosed with acute transient psychosis when I was 12 years old. Now i'm.27 years old and taking mood stabilizers like dicorate 250 mg. I had few relapses like once in two year or once in a year from which I recovered with 3 or two months and after that my dosage was always kept at a maintenance dose. I'm currently working as a software engineer. My question is do I have to take this medicine lifelong? Is there any alternate medicines which can be used as a maintenance dose instead of dicorate cause I have gained weight because of this medicine.

It is a good medication and weight gain will be a part of its effects. However, weight control can be reduced by exercise and diet. Ideally, you should include therapy along with your medication and a lot of other benefits will accrue with help to handle your emotions specifically. There is no complete cure for psychosis, depending on the severity of the disturbance. But there is scope for making you completely functional and living a normal life, if the stress is minimized. The medicines and therapy that is available now is really incredible and they can together do wonders to help you live as close to normal life as possible. If you get discouraged by this, remember that the neglect of the condition can be horrendous to you and to others around you. You must always do everything you can to seek healing, and your perseverance, commitment, compliance to the prescription, and support will determine the outcome.
