Hello lybrate-user - when was the medication started for your father? - mirtazapine 's beneficial effects may take some weeks to become apparent, some improvement may be seen within 2 weeks but may need upto 6 weeks to see signficant changes. Your father needs to be monitored during this period for any possible side effects. Sometimes dose may need to be increased. - zapiz 0.5 mgs may help to manage stress and anxiety. It works sooner but is not meant for long term use due to dependence issues. Discuss with your doctor and stop zapiz within 4 weeks.- mirtazapine may need to be continued for atleast 6 months - apart from medication, psychosocial support is also important. Keep talking to him regularly, encourage him to go for walking/gentle exercise and interact with his friends. Sometimes counselling may be needed hope this helps.

The time for recovery varies from person to person, as many factors are playing roles - age, nature of symptoms, stressors, family support, comorbidities, etc. Generally, once his symptoms are resolved (for eg lack of concentration), the medications are continued for another 6-9 months for full recovery & to reduce chance of recurrence.

Hey lybrate-user, I understand that this is a tough time for your family. While medications can be helpful, it may be very important for your father to seek emotional support and talk through his grief and issue with siblings with a therapist. Your therapist would help you to bring the thoughts and emotions triggering the depression, to your awareness and help you process them in a safe environment. So you learn to challenge the thoughts and behaviours perpetuating the symptoms in the first place. You can reach out to a trusted therapist in your city. You can also book a session with us at url/book-a-session/ we are available for online sessions. I understand that it can be painful watching someone you care for go through a difficult time and need a quick fix. But sometimes a long term solution takes a little time to achieve, but results are always healthier and longer lasting :) hope this helps. Take care!
