Jaundice is a liver disease affecting millions of people all over the world. This clinical condition is characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to the build-up of bilirubin (bile) in the body. The incidence of jaundice is rising in India due to the fact that people lack awareness about this health complication. However, it is not always possible to prevent jaundice ,but following few precautionary measures can minimise the risk. Here are five tips to help you prevent or minimise the risk of jaundice ? 1.Maintain proper hygiene and sanitation The first and foremost step to prevent infectious diseases like jaundice is by implementing high standards of hygiene and sanitation. Wash your hands with soap before eating food and after using the wash-room to restrict viral transmission. 2.Eat fresh and warm food During the monsoons, the chances of food contamination are high and hence people are advised against eating out and at unhygienic places. Always eat fresh fruits and properly cooked vegetables, preferably warm foods in order to lower your risk of liver infection. 3.Drink clean water This disease can spread through infected water and hence, it is recommended that people should drink boiled and filtered water. Avoid drinking water from unhygienic places and also bottled water (if you doubt the source of water). 4.Vaccination Get yourself and your kids vaccinated with the hepatitis vaccine (and booster) in order to prevent the disease. It is also recommended that you get your vaccination done if you are travelling to places where this disease is endemic or if your job (involves working in a high-risk area such as labs and hospitals. 5.Lifestyle factors In case you are alcoholic, try to restrict yourself to not more than 3 drinks per day, as excessive drinking puts you at risk of developing the disease. Try to maintain a healthy weight (if obese) and indulge in exercising as high cholesterol levels in the body may increase your risk of other health complications which in turn may cause hepatitis.
