I have a toothache, so I was wondering if I should go ahead & get a deep cleaning to clear up a gum infection first or should I proceed with the root canal that I have scheduled later this week?

you can go for both simultaneously or choose as per your comfort but do not go for either one.

Get a root canal done first. Once over go for other treatments.

Depends on the cause of your toothache, as per your dentist. If the toothache is a result of gum infection, scaling can be done first followed by root canal treatment. But if the toothache is resulting out of pulpal infection, rct should be started first. I am sure your dentist will help you with the decision making.
