Generally known as periodontal (gum) disease or pyorrhoea. Definition: it is a inflammatory condition affecting the tissues (gums and bones) surrounding the teeth (periodontium). In its early stage, called gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), gums become swollen, red, and may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth (recede), bone can be lost, and teeth may become loosen or may fall out. Types: there are many forms of periodontitis (plaque induced/ non-plaque induced, acute/ chronic, localised/ generalized, aggressive, nectrotizing, refractory, recurrent, periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease, endodontic-associated, genetic disorder-associated, abscesses associated) there is a detailed classification available. Causes: most common cause is poor oral hygiene, which leads to plaque and tartar formation on to the teeth surfaces. Plaque contains millions of microorganisms which releases a lot of toxins, chemicals and acids. These toxins causes inflammation in the gums which if untreated, reaches the bone causing attachment loss (loss of supporting structure) of teeth signs and symptoms may include: * redness or bleeding gums while brushing * swellon / puffy gums * gums that feel tender on touch * bad breath * metallic taste in mouth * new spaces developing between your teeth * receding gums (resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth) * deep pockets (space created between gums and teeth (loss of gum attachment) * pus between your teeth and gums * pain while chewing * loose teeth risk factors: factors that can increase your risk of periodontitis include: * gingivitis * poor oral health habits * smoking or chewing tobacco * hormonal changes, such as those related to pregnancy or menopause * obesity * inadequate nutrition, including vitamin c deficiency * genetics * certain medications that cause dry mouth or gum changes * conditions that cause decreased immunity, such as leukemia, hiv/aids and cancer treatment * certain diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and crohn's disease treatment: depends on type of periodontitis, it is cause and severity. General treatment plan includes: deep cleaning and polishing followed by flap surgery + bone grafting (if required). However the treatment plan differs for different type of periodontitis precautions: oral hygiene: 1. Brushing twice daily 2. Rinsing after every meal 3. Massaging your gums 4. Salt-water gargles get a scaling and polishing done. If you maintain your hygiene well, then you can prolong it. Â
