Hello. I am a 16 year old girl who is suspected of having polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos). I have most of the symptoms such as irregular periods, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), hair loss, oily skin and acne as a result of excess androgens, namely testosterone in my body. I am aware that saw palmetto slows down the activity of 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme responsible for the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (dht). Dht triggers the sebaceous glands to produce oil. Too much of dht makes the skin oily. In short, saw palmetto inhibits the activity of the enzyme, reducing the production of dht. I've been taking 450 mg of saw palmetto everyday for the past few weeks. However, I am worried of the effects of saw palmetto, particularly regarding my fertility. This is because saw palmetto is used to treat prostate problems in men. Thus, I would like to ask if I should continue consuming saw palmetto and if it can really treat pcos? I am more concerned in reducing my skin's sebum production. If you don't recommend saw palmetto, are there other possible pills/food that I can conveniently consume on a daily basis to lower my androgen levels? Thank you.
