The anterior (front) part of the nasal septum (partition in the nose) is richly supplied by blood vessels (Little's area). During summers, the hot dry air tends to dry the mucosa resulting in cracking or crusting leading to nose bleeds. Also, heat tends to dilate the blood vessels which may rupture spontaneously or due to nose picking. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. In case of nasal bleed, pinch the nose with the thumb & index finger to apply direct pressure onto the Little's area. Ask the child to bend forwards & breathe through the mouth. Apply ice on the forehead. The bleeding usually stops with these measures. But do consult the ENT specialist to get the nose examined & rule out any other cause for the nasal bleed.
