My question has two parts. Part 1: How many hours of sleep is necessary for and adult person in 24 hours? Part 2: If I cannot sleep for 3-consecutive nights then how many hours I should sleep to supplement the missed sleep? Do I need to sleep for the complete hours missed i.e (Sleep hours necessary in 24 hours multiplied by 3) or some other number of hours?

Its very subjective--how many hours you should sleep. Some people get refresh by sleeping only 5 hours n some need 8 hours. No, its not like your routine sleep multiplied by 3. U will sleep some hours extra first day. But then slowly body adjust by sleeping a bit extra for a few days.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Usually the an adult should have restful proper sleep for at least 7-8 hrs, can have a nap for 20-30 min in the afternoon also - not sleeping continuously for three nights will reduce your alertness & also will be difficult to make up completely, you can make up the deficit if possible by sleeping as many hours only thing is that you should feel refreshed & fully alert on waking up.
