Hello Daman, My advise for you to go ahead with composite fillings as they are more stable, better in appearance and requires lee healthy tooth structure removal. If you still wish to go forward with amalgam filling then there is no harm apart from these few points. Your Dentist will explain all the precautions after the fillings are placed.Â

Preferably go for tooth coloured filling... more aesthetic.. more stable.. more durable and less invasive as it is bonded restoration. Silver amalgam restorations are outdated. Dr. GoyalÂ

Dont even think of Silver fillings my dear. If black was the colour of the tooth, we would have never had white teeth. According to Law, In the UK, you are not allowed to let amalgam go down the drain as it causes environmental pollution, so How is it safe for the mouth? Think Yourself.Â

normally no chewing for at least 60 minutes post filling. and also ideally a follow up visit after 1 day to polish and finish the filling (bite adjustment and for long term quality of the filling) you could go for Composite/white/tooth colored fillings instead.Â

Well, After a silver filling you need to avoid any food or water for about an hour. So make sure you are well stuffed beforehand. You might not be able to chew on that side for about 8-10 hours and would need to avoid extremely hot or cold food. Make sure your dentist calls you for polishing the silver filling after 24 hours so that you can avoid any leakages or food accumulations on the rough surface.Â

There's a need for gic underneath composite only if its too large. And yes composite has many benefits as compared to silver. So get it examined by a professional and he will be the better judge which filling suits and desired area better.Â

light cure composites or Glass inomer cements are the treatment of choice now a days instead of sliver fillings for small cavities. advantages over silver fillings- 1. new fillings bond to tooth surface, where as sliver fillings dont bond to tooth. 2. more aesthetic look then sliver fillings. 3. needs less cavity cutting i.e more amount of original tooth is preserved. and many more advantages are there over silver fillings. let your dentist decide whats best in your case.Â

Silver fillings are outdated..Go for a composite restoration i.e a tooth coloured filling. Mercury from the silver fillings leach out and is proved harmful, plus the silver filliing could discolour the tooth in a long run.So my personal suggestion is you get a tooth coloured fiiling done.Â

A modified version of silver fillings previously known as amalgam restorations is available now which is known as miracle mix restoration. I would definitely recommend you to go for it as it a combination of 2 high strength cements.Â

I do agree with the advise given by dr. goyal. You should go for tooth colored filling, it looks better and does not have any side effect. According to the studies the amalgam filling is not good for health as the mercury component leacges out. though the life of tooth colored filling is far less than amalgam you should go for tooth colored.Â

You will have to avoid chewing on the filled tooth for at least 24 hours as silver filling takes some time to get ready to bear chewing forces....that's it.Â

Hello there. Go for a high strength posterior composite restoration instead of silver amalgam. It's not usually recommend by dentists these days. I hope your dentist makes the most favourable decision for you. Take careÂ
