Mam, I am taking ativan 2 mg once in a day at night as I have anxiety and insomnia. I want to stop this medicine as it has habit forming tendencies. What should I do?

It is very very dangerous on a longer run. Ativan contains lorazepam which is a benzodiazepine, which can cause shrinking of brain, early dementia, personality changes, withdrawal seizures, cognitive deficits and so on. Consult a psychiatrist who will give correct medications which can be taken on a longer run for anxiety without causing harm, and also would help in weaning away from ativan. All the best.

Dear lybrate-user Stopping ativan suddenly can lead to rebound insomnia and anxiety. It has to be stopped gradually, preferably under supervision of a psychiatrist. I Will recommend that you consult a psychiatrist for a detailed assessment to understand the cause of anxiety and insomnia. Treatment may consist of medicine and therapy.
