Root canal can be adviced after many investigations amongst which major is an IOPAR i.e. The xray of that too. Only then the dentist can advice you for an RCT. Many a times a big looking cavity is not that deep and can only be corrected by restorations of fillings. If you want you can go for a second advice.

Kindly get an X-ray done of the decayed tooth as you and your dentist will come to know the extent of decay whether it is involving pulp or not. If not then you may get the caries removed and get the cavity filled with a tooth coloured restoration. If it is involving pulp or close to pulp then you may have to get root canal treatment done followed by a cap/ crown. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene.
