Will a person with Type 2 diabetes under control end up with the need for insulin?

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is a proven fact that by the time T2 DM is detected, the Insulin producing Beta cells number in pancreas is already down to about 50% of the original. Therefore, over the year of the course of the disease, there is further reduction of these cells due to glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity. Later when beta cells number goes below 30% of normal there is a need for Insulin supplement. Which means as the persons with diabetes live longer say over 35 to 40 years or longer, then majority of them will need Insulin supplement along with other drugs. This happens even with good control. Thanks.
