Usually back pain in younger age groups is due to muscular strain or spine disc prolapse. In muscle strain using that particular muscle will be painful. In disc prolapse back pain with or without leg pain more in sitting, walking, forward bending & relived by lying down. Your friend's problem seems to be disc related problem. He need rest, pain killers. Pl consult a pain consultant or any doctor for good clinical examinations. Some time MRI may be required.
