I am a 29 years old Thyroid patient for the last 14 years. Till date I have not been advised on the proper way to take the medicine in the morning or what should be the gap to eat anything once you have taken the medicine. What is the long term impact on the health & how to treat it permanently.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Usually Levothyroxine is taken early morning on empty stomah. After that nothing should be taken for at least 1 to 1 and half hour. This is essential for the drugs absorption. Treatment with Levothyroxine is for lifetime. It is necessary to take adequate dosage, which maintains TSH level around 3 to 4 mU/L. At that level all the symptoms for hypothyroidism are in check. The drug used (levothyroxine) is a synthetic thyroxine, the hormone secreted by our thyroid gland, there are hardly any side effects. There is no adverse effect on the health, in fact not taking the correct dosage is is more harmful. Thanks.
