Hello Lybrate User, Ascitis or water retention in Abdomen due to liver condition can also happen in people who doesn't drink. There may be possibility of Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, acute drug-reactions etc. Proper diagnosis can be ascertained by his blood reports. Mild ascitis resolves itself within few days of treatment. Moderate ascitis needs extensive remedies and in many cases it also minimises if patient responds well. On the other hand, if Ascites is More, there can be need of aspiration (sucking out) by surgery. All the best.
