My mother has been suffering from diabetes for the past 15 years. She has to take insulin and medicines everyday as prescribed by doctor. Because of which her blood sugar level goes below normal on certain occasions. But today, it dropped to 37 mg/dl, which has never happened before. She was feeling very weak for sometime and took some glucose after that. Please Doctor, let me know what should be done to avoid such situations in future.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Severe hypoglycemic episodes happen if the Insulin dosage and food intake is not properly matched. Since no details are provided like the current treatment (oral and Insulin type and dosage), dietary habits, fasting & PP glucose levels, age of the patient and extent of exercise that she might be doing. Also HbA1c%. If too strict glucose control is aimed then chances of going hypoglycemic is more likely to occur. If you come back with above details and also provide a chart showing a weeks or 15 days different glucose levels (like fasting one day, PP, pre-lunch, pre- dinner and post lunch, post dinner and 3 am), that will give an idea about where the problem is occurring. Thanks.

If she is not taking food at the proper time after taking insulin also one reason, apart from that if she is taking more dose she can have hypoglycaemia. In such a case you check blood sugars before breakfast and before lunch and before dinner for one or two days and you can find out which time sugar is high and which time it is very normal or low, accordingly you can increase or decrease the dosage of insulin. So keep in mind and also always keep some easily digestible food, if you get low sugar symptoms you can take some amount of food, you can prevent hypo. All the best.
