My granddaughter has got tests done for thyroid. The results show T3 total =1.19 T4 Total =6.00 TSH =8.25 (higher than the reference) All other blood tests are normal she is 19+ (years) has added about 10 kg in one year.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. TSH 8.25 mU/L is showing subclinical hypothyroidism. At this level usually no treatment is advocated unless there are troublesome symptoms of hypothyroidism present. In her case as she has added 10 kgs in one year, means there is a need for starting treatment with levothyroxine. The dosage has to be calculated on the basis of height, weight, T4 & TSH levels. The thyroxine tablets need to be taken early morning on empty stomach and nothing should be taken for about 1 to 1 and half hour after that. Plus it is essential to check TSH level after 6 to 8 weeks to see if desired level (between 3 to 4 mU/L) is achieved. Plus she has to avoid soy beans and soy containing foods. Also has to exercise to loose weight. Thanks.
