My dad had been drinking alcohol every day for last 20-25 years. He is 62 years at the moment. Since 1 week he has not been drinking due to his throat issue where a small mass is found. Yesterday he had a biopsy surgery too. It seems he is having withdrawal symptoms very low blood sugar, severe nervousness, sleeping disorder etc. Please suggest what to do!

Dear lybrate-user, Your dad was dependent on alcohol. It is usual for him to get withdrawal symptoms when he stops all of a sudden. He needs to be admitted and given plenty of Thiamine as injection or in drip and tablets. He needs tablet lorazepam every 2-3 hours depending on his withdrawal symptoms measured on a special scale in the ward. Uncomplicated withdrawal will subside with this treatment in 2-3 days. Complication can occur as fits, delirium, neuropathy etc. Those need more treatment. Just admit him to hospital nearby and they will take care.
