Tooth decay has various stages which starts with the first layer of tooth i. E enamel (hardest substance of the body) at this point you will not feel any pain. 2nd stage- decay reaches dentin where you feel sensitivity but still won't feel any pain. At both these stages teeth can be saved with fillings. 3rd stage- decay reaches the pulp (nerves) where you feel excruciating pain. At this stage, teeth can still be saved with root canal treatment where nerves are removed from the teeth and filled with guttapercha material and the teeth are restored. The sooner you get the treatment done the more the life of the teeth. After this we have to go for extraction (removal) of the tooth. So consult the dentist immediately to assess at what stage it is, get it treated and put a stop to the decay at this point.
