Dear sir/madam, yesterday I asked a question regarding diabetes, if sugar is not the cause of diabetes then patients are being asked to go for blood test every six months. Did not receive any reply. My second question is whether patient can take vit d n vit 12 without consulting gp. Thanking you shahani.

Hello, Thanks for the question. Diabetes occurs because of following reasons: 1) There may be total absence of Insulin production by beta cells of pancreas, leading to T1 DM, 2) Deficiency in the insulin production where there is less than required amount of insulin, or 3) Resistance to insulin action or both. The last two lead to T2 diabetes. 4) Other important causes precipitating diabetes are being over weight or obese and not doing any physical activity. One of the methods of detecting diabetes is the increased blood glucose (sugar) level, hence glucose level has to be tested. Once diabetes develops then one has to stop intake of sweets, sugar, jaggery and over all carbohydrates. As regards taking of Vit D3 and B12, unless there is a specific need one should not take these. It is always good to ask a doctor whether there is a need. Thanks.
