It's been 6 months that I have worn retainer 24*7 & made visits as instructed by my Ortho. Next month I'm shifting to another country so is it fine if I do not make dentist visits any more but continue wearing my retainer 24*7 for the remaining 6 months.

Hello Lybrate user there are two kinds of retainer one is fixed and the other is removable. In fixed retainer we place thin wires behind the front teeth and fix it with an adhesive materials. This fixed wire prevents the teeth from moving. In your case I would suggest you to wear this fixed retainer. Also you can ask about Essix retainer which is more esthetic and easy to wear and remove. Hope this helps.

Dear Lybrate user, you should take all your orthodontic treatment records along with you to whichever country you are moving to. It's very important in case of any emergency like losing the retainer, breakage of retainer or change in fit of the retainer. Procure all your xray copies from your current dentist. Since you are moving out, there is no possibility of follow ups with your current dentist but remaining 6 months of retainer wear is a very long time to not follow up with any dentist. Orthodontic treatment solely relies on timely follow ups. If you do not get any problem in your retainer corrected or if you stop wearing it due to any reason, it may lead to the reversing of your treatment effects. Hence I would suggest you to follow up with a dentist in your new country. Best wishes.
