Sometimes due to some of the reasons Root canal treatment fails. It can be due to reinfection of same tooth, incomplete filling, lateral canals in the root, missed extra canals in the tooth and unskilled/inexperienced dentist. Problem in the adjacent tooth cannot be ignored. So you must visit a dentist and an X-ray film will do the job. Once diagnosis is made, it will be helpful to decide further required treatment. Thank You.

Dear Lybrate user, if you still have sensation in a root canal treated tooth, it means that the treatment is advancing towards failure. A swelling in a nearby tooth is possibly due to re-infection of root canal treated tooth. It is called an abscess and it might also lead to some pus formation around it. Consult your dentist immediately to get the tooth assessed. In such cases, either Re-RCT is done or the tooth is extracted if the condition is worse.

It could be due to the re-infection or cavity in the adjacent tooth.

Hi lybrate-user It is less likely to have sensations in the root canal treated teeth. From your condition I can think of two possibilities 1.the sensations and swelling could be due to the adjacent teeth which would require treatment 2. Your root canal treatment must have failed due to which you must be having swelling. Kindly get it checked at the earliest to avoid any further damage. Thanks.
