Both are good. Not to worry much. If amalgam it has its own advantages. Chance of secondary caries is little low. But colour matching s not good. Composite colour matching s good. And chances of secondary caries is little high with composite as its techique sensitive.

Third molar is not visible while talking laughing etc if it's a deep cavity composite is not preferred sometimes as it may cause irritation to underlying pulp

Composite filling is technique sensitive and often fails because of improper manipulation. Its costly compared to amalgam filling. Amalgam is stronger, cheaper and requires less skill to perform. The other reason for not using composite is greater decay of tooth. So do not worry whatever is filled it should be proper for longevity of the concerned tooth. THANK YOU.

Nowadays the era is of metal free dentistry. We strictly do only composite fillings. Rest depends on the dentist and patient.

Dear Lybrate user, it is true that composites require less cutting and are tooth colored so they look more aesthetic. Many dentists have completely eliminated amalgam fillings from their dental practice. Although, as a material, amalgam has more strength than composites and is very long lasting too. Your dentist might be preferring it because composites are very technique sensitive, they cost more than amalgam fillings and the third molar area is hard to work on. We cannot comment on his judgement and choice of material without examining the teeth. If you want a composite filling, you can talk it out with your dentist. If he has the material and equipment available at the clinic, i'm sure he won't mind doing the filling of your choice if that is feasible according to the tooth.
