Greetings, amRaja of age 25. Came up with a humerus shaft fracture (transverse) before 6 weeks, bone seems to be in alignment and shows signs of healing .how long should I be in the cast and how to identify that it's about time to remove my cast and start with pt. Can see a fluffy cloud pattern around the fracture but inside the unity isn't 100 percent yet. Once healing Is complete, can I resume lifting weights slowly by increasing the weight?

6 to 8 weeks is usually enough for healing. Again the treating orthopedic surgeon is the best person to advise you. You can also consult an orthopedic surgeon near your residence or on nearby medical college. Lifting weights is not advisable for 6 months after the fracture. You can start with freehand exercises first and then start lifting weights very gradually. It is advisable to get a digital x-ray done after six months to ensure that full healing has taken place. Of course physiotherapy is advisable once the cast is removed that is 8 weeks after the incident.

Usually the cast is removed in 6 weeks as keeping it longer will cause shoulder and elbow stiffness. The fracture can take 6 to 8 months to heal. If the fracture has not been fixed with a plate or nail, lifting weight is not advisable for another 3 months. If the fracture has been fixed you can immediately start physiotherapy and lift weight upto 2 kg.
