It depends upon the etiology. If the polyps are fungal in origin, then chance of recurrence is high. Also in a country like India where dust and pollution is everywhere, curing polyps is very difficult cos the patient goes back to the same environment after surgery. I have had many patients who never had recurrence after they settled in Europe or America. Middle East and Asia are hot and dusty which is perfect for polyps. Plus genetic factors like allergy, asthma, etc also increase recurrence. Polyps and allergy/asthma go hand in hand. Has any physician promised you a cure for asthma? The same goes for polyps. We can remove them by surgery and prescribe inhalers to prevent them from growing back. If you take 100 patients, polyps tend to grow back in 30 who require resurgery. 60 pts have small polyps but have good control of symptoms in whom we treat medically. 10 patients are totally symptom free and have no polyps.
