I have GERD and want to avoid surgery. I am told that it can be managed by changes in life style and medicines. But I am also told that over a prolonged period of time anti-acids are habit forming/addictive and have their severe side effects. Please advise.

Hello lybrate-user, GERD is very common problem not a days but its symptoms mimics many other disease. Its diagnosed is made after UGI endoscopy, Esopahgeal manometry and 24 hr Ph metry. Once diagnosis is made PPI are given which may be required life long. However now a days antireflux endoscopy managements are available which are day care procedure and donot require any open surgery. Patient can be discharged on same day and requiremement of PPI decrease markedly and sometime they are stopped. So, surgery is not required in all cased. If you wan you can contact us for same.
