The ulcerative colitis is chronic inflammatory disease It is autoimmune disease with no apparent cure. Diet and medicines difinitely improve symptoms and quality of life. There is typical relapse and remission of the disease. Yes it could be occasionally life threatening if complicated with megacolon or perforation. Surgery is the option. Genetics triggered by environmental factors may play a role in siblings. Best wishes
