If one has unrecognized diabetes with very high blood glucose (hyperglycemia), then there is a possibility of loosing considerable amount of glucose through urine. Because if blood glucose goes above 180 mg, kidneys are not able to reabsorb it. So a great deal is lost in the urine. This leads to increased thirst, increased hunger, excess urination. Plus there will unexplained weight loss with severe weakness and fatigue. But if you control blood glucose with proper medications, plus dietary restriction and regular exercise, then there is a possibility of regaining lost weight and usual fitness. You should strive to maintain FBG <100 mg, PP: 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. When that happens you can regain fitness and gain some weight. Thanks.
