Hi root canal treatment is suggested when pulp is exposed and it cant be filled. In rct pulp of whole tooth including all roots are removed and after proper sterlization and making the tooth non vital, the pulp chamber is filled with filling material like gutta parcha. And finally tooth structure is saved.Â

Root canal treatment is the removal of the tooth's pulp, a small, thread-like tissue in the center of the tooth. Once the damaged, diseased or dead pulp is removed, the remaining space is cleaned, shaped and filled. This procedure seals off the root canal. Â

Root canal therapy as we call this is a very simple procedure that can go a long way in increasing the life of your damaged tooth. You need to understand a few things first. Our tooth is made up of 3 layers, the top most layer that you see in the tooth is the enamel, next comes the dentine and below that is the pulp that supplies blood and nerves to the tooth. Now whenever any infection, cavity or for that matter trauma hurts this pulp the tooth starts showing signs of discomfort. Pain is one of them. Now in rct we remove this pulp and fill the area with inert bio compatible material so that the tooth stays for function and is not to be removed. Make sure you get a crown prosthesis made over a rct treated tooth so that it doesn't break. Â

Hello before starting discussion about rct, let me brief about basic structure of tooth. The postion of tooth which we see in mouth above the gums is called crown and the part which is belo the gum line embedded in bone is root/roots. Both crown and root collectively form a tooth. The tooth crown is divided into three parts: outermost layer-enamel, second layer-dentin and inner to dentin is a hollow space called as pulp. This pulp contains blood vessels, nerves. When cavity starts in enamel, it doesn't hurt at all as the gap/distance from nerves in pulp is too far. As cavity progresses in dentin. Sensitivity to cold starts, then with hot sopmetimes. Upto this level of cavity stage restoration (tooth filling) can be done to prevent any assault/damage to pulp. But if the cavity reaches pulp then one experience sensitivity to sweets and severe pain and associated headache of same side. Then the option left is to take radiograph and rct (root canal therapy/treatment), in this procedure a larger cavity is prepared in tooth to reach the pulp space (usually done under anaesthesia) and diseased pup tissues are removed till root tips, hollow space is thoroughly debrided/cleaned and when pain etc subsides this hollow space is filled with suitable biocompatible material, and final restoration is done. This complete the rct treatment. This is usually multiple sitting procedure, and depends upon case to case. However after rct a cap (artificial crown) is a must to provide strength to tooth. Â

1. Root canal treatment is needed when an injury or a large cavity damages the tooth's root. The root becomes infected or inflamed. 2. The dentist numbs the tooth. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth to the pulp chamber. 3. Special files are used to clean the infection and unhealthy pulp out of the canals. Then they shape the canals for the filling material. Irrigation is used to help clean the canals and remove debris. 4. The canals are filled with a permanent material. Typically this is done with a material known as gutta-percha. This helps to keep the canals free of infection or contamination. 5. A temporary filling material is placed on top of the gutta-percha to seal the opening. The filling remains until the tooth receives a permanent filling or a crown. A crown, sometimes called a cap, looks like a natural tooth. It is placed over the top of the tooth. 6. In some cases, a post is placed into the root next to the gutta-percha. This gives the crown more support.Â
