When medicines are taken irregularly, after a gap, theymay not work in OCD. You need to discuss with your psychiatrist and get a different one. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health problem. Symptoms typically include recurring thoughts and repetitive actions in response to the recurring thoughts. A common example is recurring thoughts about germs and dirt, with a need to wash your hands repeatedly to "clean off the germs" However, there are many other examples. The usual treatments are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medicine, or both. Treatment often works well to reduce the symptoms and distress of OCD greatly. Consult a psychiatrist. All the best.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, I went through your query in detail and can understand your concerns. You are a medical student yourself and should understand that not all side effects mentioned in books actually happen to all patients. Secondly, the side effects you mentioned are not caused by the medicines for OCD. You have seen on yourself that medications had helped you in past and stopping them was a mistake. The symptoms of OCD are far more distressing than the side effects. Moreover, if you develop any side effect, that can be managed. So, stop worrying about side effects even before they happen. The dose of fluoxetine can further be increased safely and if even then, there is no relief in symptoms, shift to another medication may be required. Talk to your psychiatrist regarding the same. In addition, consider psychotherapy in form of CBT together with medications for a better response. Your psychiatrist will be able to guide you regarding that too. I do hope that you recover soon enough. Best wishes.

Fluoxetine is a drug of choice for OCD. OCD has a waxing and waning course and usually worsen with stress. Don't worry about the side effects. Leave it to your therapist who can guide you through. Just stay in the treatment process. There are alternatives available for treatment other fluoxetine also. Also psychotherapy and CBT helps.
