Also referred to as Cervical Osteoporosis, this condition basically occurs when the joints and discs of the neck experience excessive cartilage wear and tear. It may cause long term stiffness and pain. The causes include herniated discs, dehydrated spinal discs, bone spurs and even injuries.
HOW IS CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS DIAGNOSED?
An orthopaedic diagnosis of cervical spondylosis is done by initially ruling out fibromyalgia. Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT scan, MRI scan and other tests such as EMG and nerve conduction tests are conducted to diagnose cervical spondylosis.
HOW IS CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS TREATED?
In most cases, the treatment involved with this condition is known to be conservative. Rest and use of cervical collar is recommended. Anti-inflammatory drugs and non-narcotic pain relief medications can help in relieving the pain. Physical therapy including application of cold and hot compress is suggested. Epidural steroid injections can also be considered as a treatment option.
