Hye, thanks for the query. Your weight is a balance of calories. Fad diets may promise you that counting carbs or eating a mountain of fruits will make the fats drop. But when it comes to weight loss, it's sensible eating that counts. Weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you take in. You can do that by reducing extra calories from food and beverages, and increasing calories burned through physical activity. Understand that weight /fat loss involves sensible eating. You have to eat the right foods at the right time. Eat small but frequent meals. Take smaller main meals. Possibly you are actually eating too less causing a decrease in metabolism. Take a glass of lime water 10minutes before meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Avoid junk as far as possible. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Lastly be committed.                        Remember it's a lifestyle change and not a one time thing.     All the so called fad, crash, restricted diets will only give you muscle and bone loss. The fats will remain as it is. So, don't forget the bottom line: The key to successful weight loss is a commitment to making indefinite changes in your diet and exercise habits.

Go to bed at right time and after washing the legs. Switch off your electronic gadget before going to sleep. If you are fond music you can switch on light music at that time. Take homeopathic kali phos 6x, 4 tablet 4 times daily to relax your self.

What?s the Only Best Thing You Must Do For Yourself ?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
What?s the Only Best Thing You Must Do For Yourself ?

Being positive is the best thing you can do for yourself!

Do you see life as a blessing, an opportunity or a burden? The answer to this question plays a significant role in shaping your existence as it decides your outlook towards life. Being positive or optimistic is highly beneficial for your psychological and physical well-being.  Positive thinking is an idea that not only drives you towards success, but also makes way for happiness in your life.

Cultivating positivity is undoubtedly the best thing you can do for yourself as it makes your life worth living, besides delivering a bunch of health benefits.

Here are 6 of them.

1. Gives you a longer life span

A positive outlook not only keeps you happy, but also increases your life expectancy by manifold in comparison to people with pessimistic thoughts. A recent Dutch study analysed the thought patterns of people for 9 years to come to this conclusion. According to this study, which was published in JAMA Psychiatry, people with a generally pessimistic approach have decreased life expectancy by 55%.

2. Increases good cholesterol level

A research was conducted in 2013 by Harvard School of Public Health to find the link between optimism and cholesterol levels. The study was carried out among middle-aged people and it revealed that that optimistic thought patterns indicated increased levels of “good” cholesterol.

3. Boosts your immune system

Researchers are of the opinion that people who cultivate positive thoughts show a stronger immune response in comparison to people who associate themselves with negative emotions.

4. Increases your confidence

Having positive thoughts can be very advantageous for you as it teaches you to feel good about yourself. This encourages you to try new things and accept challenges more heartily, which in turn boosts your confidence level drastically. Increased self confidence drives you towards success and enhances your performance in all phases of life.

5. Helps you cope with stress better

Studies show that when optimists face a situation, which is not in their favour, they focus more on solving the problem instead of getting disappointed or frustrated. Positive thoughts make you enthusiastic and teach you to deal with any stressful situation with a smile, thereby helping you to work your way out of a crisis. It has also been observed that positive thinking among adolescents acts as a source of protection against depression and behavioural problems commonly faced during teenage.

6. Reduces risk of cardiovascular diseases

A recent study conducted by the American Heart Association, and published in its journal Circulation, showed that people who depicted a positive attitude towards life had decreased their chances of getting heart diseases by 73% in comparison to their pessimistic counterparts. According to researchers, this happens because optimism leads people towards a healthier lifestyle, comprising of a balanced diet and a proper exercise regime. Moreover, optimistic people also have the improved ability to deal with stress, which further points towards a healthy existence.

Balance your diet with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Eating these types of foods more than other types can help you feel fuller on fewer calories. This can help cut calories from your diet and generate the caloric deficit needed to lose weight, including the weight on your lower body.Limit the amount of food you put on your plate.Watch your intake of both fat and sugar. Include aerobic activities into your day-to-day routine, particularly those exercises that work the lower half of the body. Swimming, biking, jogging, hiking and simply walking not only burn calories — which can help you reach the deficit to lose weight — but these activities also strengthen and tone the muscles of your legs and buttocks. This can provide you with shapelier legs and a more pert behind once you lose the weight. Add strength-training activities to your workouts. On the days that you’re not doing cardio exercises, work in some lunges, squats, leg lifts and other lower-body activities that further tone and strengthen the legs.

My daughter is 15 years but she has put ion weight her height is 5.5 but weight is 67 kg. Can you please suggest some medicines to reduce her weight.

Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
I am both a registered dietitian and a doctor who will help you in losing your weight .Let me know your food intake details. The best diet is one which is healthy and well balanced with foods from all the food groups, and one which is varied and that you can stick to Weight loss on some diets can be dramatic in the short term, but there's more of a chance of rebound weight gain. Set yourself a realistic target and aim to lose between (0.5-1.0kg) a week I being a registered Dietitian strongly accommodate the patients own preferences without the patient feeling that they are on a diet not compromising the weight management goals. Don't fall for self dieting or fad diets availiable online they have harmful effects in the long run, if you lose a lot of weight very quickly, you may not lose as much fat as you would with a more modest rate of weight loss. Instead, you might lose water weight or even lean muscle tissue, since it's hard to burn that many fat calories in a short period. I will need to carry out detailed assessment in your case, After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, I will recommend a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. Also the overall objective should not be to drastically reduce weight but doing it gradually and help rebuild body tissues and to maintain ideal body weight. I being a both a registered dietitian (RD) and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problems through a holistic approach using customized therapeutic diet and medications . I will also suggest home remedies. Do reply back for private consultation for Rx.

Hi lybrate-user, please consult a doctor and dietician before you start taking any such supplements. The best treatment for pcod is a high fiber low fat diet and believe me thyroid and pcod both can be treated best with a diet only as there is no permanent cure for the same. These supplements would just give you temporary effects or would have no effect at all. Have a diet which has good amounts of fiber which you shall get from foods like fruits, veggies, brown rice, quinoa, daliya. Consume nuts like almonds or walnuts because they contain good fats (only 4 in a day. To add protein you can have dal, pulses, chicken, eggs, yoghurt, milk, cottage cheese etc. Stay hydrated and drink at least 12-15glasses of water per day.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
6 Crucial Tests You Must Do If You Have Diabetes
========================================
High is our spirit when it comes to having chatpata khaana, cold drinks, ice creams and fast food. How excited are we in going for tests regularly once we feel diabetes creeping into our system or when we have been diagnosed of diabetes?
Going for diabetes-related check-ups is something most of us don’t take seriously. Unfortunately, most of us don’t realize the negative impact of diabetes on our body including the brain, kidneys, heart, legs and eyes. High levels of blood sugar can lead to kidney damage, blurred vision and blindness, high cholesterol and heart disease, poor blood circulation in feet and legs causing amputation in severe cases. Before it starts to cause more harm to you, it is time to go for a couple of routine tests, starting today.
Test 1 – Hemoglobin A1c
Many diabetics miss out on this one!
Getting your fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels are simply not enough.
HbA1c measures our average blood sugar of the previous three months. This is done in order to see if the blood sugar has stayed within the target and permissible range.
If the curious you want to know more about HbA1c, then here we go:
The red blood cells in our body have haemoglobin which enables the cells to facilitate oxygen in the tissues. As the cell ages, glucose molecules stick to it called ‘glycation’ in medical terms. Higher glycated haemoglobin means higher glucose levels in the blood which means higher HbA1c reading. Though normal Hb1c for non-diabetics is 4% to 5%, poorly controlled diabetes has HbA1c value of 7%. If HbA1C exceeds 8%, it means blood sugar has gone out of control.
Test 2 – Dilated Eye
People suffering from diabetes need to consult their ophthalmologist for a dilated eye exam. It’s a test in which the pupils are widened by putting eye drops so as to check any signs of blindness.
High blood sugar levels as a result of diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina. If not treated on time, the blood vessels can bleed leading to blurred vision and damaging the retina thereby leading to blindness in the longer run. Therefore, it’s advisable for patients suffering from Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to go for a proper eye examination once a year. This will help in identifying eye problems and any malfunctioning in eyesight or vision that is related to diabetes. The more the delay in eye check-ups, the more are the chances of developing ocular problems.
Test 3 – Foot Examination
Patients suffering from diabetes often complain of numbness and decreased blood circulation in foot. Often they are not able to see if their foot gets injured. Even if an infection occurs, healing is slow in diabetics increasing the risk of gangrene. If ignored, the complications can lead to foot amputation.
From time to time keep checking your feet for sores and infections, especially between the toes. If you notice any ulcers, blisters, skin breakouts or redness happening, consult your doctor right away.
Test 4 – Blood Lipids/ Cholesterol Check
This test is all about lipid profile screening that should be done once a year. It checks your HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol) as well as triglyceride levels. Ideally, your LDL cholesterol should be less than 100. However, if you are a patient suffering from heart disease, your doctor may advise you a further lower LDL figure.
Test 5 – Kidney function
Make it a point to get an annual urine test done. This will check out the protein levels in your body. Also make sure to get a blood test done annually to check out the creatinine level. Both these tests help in analysing the performance of your kidneys.
Test 6 – Blood Pressure
From time to time, get your blood pressure checked. As a diabetic, the goal should be to get 125/75. In case you are a healthy individual without diabetes, your blood pressure should be less than 130/80.
Now that you have got a fair knowledge of the lab tests that need to be done in case you have diabetes, go ahead and get them done. Timely screening of diabetes is the first thing you need to go for.
Remember your loved ones wants you to stay in the pink of health. FOr more doubts ask me privately

Dietitian/Nutritionist,
I am 15 years old male and I am very thin. What I can do?
I am a registered dietitian and a doctor who will help you in managing your weight. You need to provide me your daily food intake details. There are many lifestyle and dietary guidelines that can be followed: take high protein prescribed diet, have paneer, eggs and potatoe daily. Incorporate dry fruits in your diet on a daily basis. Eat a balanced diet as prescribed by a registered dietitian, I being a registered dietitian and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problem. I will also prescribe medicines that will speed up the time to achieve your weight management goals. Gradual weight management is always advisable. An increase in 500 kcal per day can result in increasing the body weight by 0.5 kgs per week. Objective should be to restore a desirable weight/ ideal body weight according to one's age, gender and height. To rebuild body tissues, to maintain a good nutritional status and to maintain ideal body weight. I will need to carry out detailed assessment in your case, after assessing your personal challenges to weight management, I will recommend a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. I being a both a registered dietitian (rd) and doctor have been successfully helping patients with their problems through a holistic approach using customized therapeutic diet and medications. Lybrate-user, first thing is to control hypothyroidism with appropriate treatment and bring tsh levels between 3 to 4 units /ml. If this is not achieved, then efforts to reduce weight will not be successful. You are over weight in fact you have grade 1 obesity with 31.06 kg / m2 bmi, so please see that tsh levels are brought to that level and then only you can try reducing weight. It is possible to cut up 2 kg per month provided strict diet control and exrcise schedule is adapted and adhered to.

I'm drinking bitter gourd, bottle gourd and amla mixed juice everyday in the morning with empty stomach. Is it good for weight loss?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

I'm drinking bitter gourd, bottle gourd and amla mixed juice everyday in the morning with empty stomach. Is it good f...
These three products have substances that lower and maintain the blood sugar level in your body. It also prevents your body from absorbing extra sugar. Apart from this, bitter gourd increases the number of beta cells in your pancreas. These cells are involved in secreting insulin. If the insulin level rises high, the blood sugar level decreases. This eventually leads to weight loss. Amla is an excellent source of fiber, vitamin C, carbohydrate and protein. It has very low calorie content. 100 grams of fresh Amla have only 44 calories. So, basically Amla has all essential elements that can improve protein synthesis and encourage metabolism. A faster and better metabolism ensures quick fat burn. Amla nd Bottle gourd can reduce hunger intensity. Considering the nutritional sources like fiber, it’s not hard to understand that an Amla juice drink can keep the stomach full for a considerably longer time. Obese people struggling to manage food craving can see the major difference. To reduce weight, it’s important that an overweight person develops apathy for the fast food, which is almost impossible with an intense hunger propensity. So, if food craving can be controlled with the help of Amla juice, inclination for the fast food and unhealthy snacking will automatically reduce.
