Vertigo: Causes and Treatment

Vertigo: Causes and Treatment

Vertigo is a medical condition where the affected person feels that the world or surrounding environment is spinning or moving. It is accompanied with nausea, vomiting, sweating and having problems in walking steadily. Moving your head worsens this condition. An illusion of movement is observed.

Vertigo arises from several conditions. There are mainly two types of Vertigo:

Peripheral Vertigo: This is the most common vertigo and is caused often due to a problem in the balance mechanism of the inner ear. The causes include:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: Being one of the common causes of vertigo, BPPV occurs due to certain head movements when standing up or bending over. The attacks are short, powerful and recurrent in nature. Nausea is also accompanied. A feeling of lightheadedness and despaired balance is observed after the attack. Fragments of calcium carbonate crystals are broken off from the channel linings present in the inner ear. These fragments cause the problem by getting into the ear fluid canals, and certain  head movement sweeps them across the canal causing vertigo.
  • Head Injury: Vertigo develops due to head injuries, and the symptoms are similar to that of dizziness.
  • Labyrinthitis: It is an infection in the inner ear, which causes the labyrinth of the ear to get inflamed. The labyrinth controls our hearing and balance. An inflammation causes it to send different information than the other, normal ear. This conflict causes vertigo. Such vertigo can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, loss of hearing and ear pain.
  • Vestibular Neuronitis: This is a condition pertaining to the inner ear, which causes inflammation of the nerve which connects the labyrinth to the brain.  The condition arises from viral infections. Nausea and vomiting are observed, and this condition leads to vertigo.
  • Meniere's DiseaseThis rare condition in the inner ear causes severe vertigo along with hearing loss and aural fullness. Meniere's disease prompts sudden vertigo attacks with nausea and vomiting.

Central Vertigo: Central vertigo arises from problems in the cerebellum of the brain and brainstem. Causes include:

  • Migraines
  • Sclerosis, a condition which affects the central nervous system
  • Acoustic neuroma, a type of brain cancer growing on the acoustic nerve
  • Brain tumors, stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • Certain medications

Treatment:
Treatment of vertigo depends on the cause and on the extent of symptoms. Labyrinthis and vestibular neuronitis are cured by vestibular rehabilitation and medication. BBVV is treated using a process called the Epley maneuver. Meniere's disease is cured by modes of dietary restriction, medication, treating tinnitus and treating hearing loss. Generally, curing the cause of vertigo helps in healing the disorder.

Vertigo is caused by different reasons and factors and rectification of these factors helps in the treatment of vertigo.

I suffer from a runny nose syndrome since last two years after a burst of sneezing. What should I do?

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
1. Do steam inhalation by steam inhaler 2-3 times daily with karvol plus inhalant capsule 2. Put otrivin nasal drop 1 drop thrice daily. 3. Take one tablet of levocetrizine (5mg) at bed time. 4. Drink lukewarm water/hot soup/herbal tea etc 5. If you have recurrent attack of cold you may be having sinusitis/allergic rhinitis 6. Take plain xray pns/ct scan of pns after consulting ent specialist to exclude sinusitis and take treatment accordingly 7. If sinusitis is excluded, it I could be due to allergic rhinitis, do an allergy test after consulting allergy specialist/immunologist to find out the cause of allergy and follow the treatment and advice accordingly.

Some times I bleeding from the nose, and aslo my stomach is very paining what should I do?

Some times I bleeding from the nose, and aslo my stomach is very paining what should I do?
DEAR Lybrate USER. This problem is due to increased amount of abnormal pitta dosha in a rakta dhatu. So that suddha rakta converted into dushit rakta. And because of this strength of capillaries in the nose decreases and they rupture consequently bleeding occurs.…. You have to follow some basic things, so that you get better results in a short period of time …. 1) take solid diet two times in a day and liquid diet two times in a day …. 2) drink only 100-150 ml of lukewarm water during meals …. 3) don’t drink water before meal for one hour and one hour after meal…5) avoid oily, spicy, junk, fermented and stale foods…. 6) avoid late night sleeping habits. 7) avoid day time sleeping. A) take 50 ml of triphala juice and 15 ml of honey along with 50 ml of lukewarm water early in the morning and at night before sleep. Along with this take 2-2 tablets of RAKTASTAMBHAK VATI (dhootpapeshwar company. B) take 2-2 tablets of AAROGYAWARDHINI VATI and CHANDRAPRABHA VATI after meals. C) instill 4-4 drops of BADAM tail in each nostrils two times in a day. Do all these things for 7 days. This formulation is 100% effective. Consult to me for further suggestions. THANKS.

If nasal block is only on right side and no sneezing/running nose then it can be due to dns to rt but your ct report says only mild dns which should not cause such problem. Take second opinion of a ent spe and follow their advise. If dns is the cause then surgery is only option.

U probably have an infection likely viral which has involved your throat, ear and eyes. You can start with warm water gargle or butadiene gargles for your throat. And an antibiotic 4-6 times daily for your eyes. It is always better to be evaluated by a doctor. You will need to see both ent n eye specialists.

Any nicotine that is swallowed with saliva or washed down with eating or drinking will not be effective. If a substantial amount of nicotine is swallowed, it may cause such side effects as heartburn, upset stomach or hiccups. Thus, do not eat or drink while you have the gum in your mouth. Your feedback matters. Thank-you.

I have an sinus problem I start sneezing every morning I woke up. What is the medicines or treatment for that?

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Allergy is one of the factors responsible for the sinuses to get involved. A ct scan of the sinuses along with a nasal endoscopic examination will pin point where exactly is the problem. Taking an anti allergic tablet will give you some relief in the symptoms.
