“Look, Mom! I Have a Loose Tooth!

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
“Look, Mom! I Have a Loose Tooth!
It’s a pretty special moment when your child runs to you for the first time and tells you their tooth is loose. For a child, loose teeth means that they’ll be a big kid soon. For parents, it means their little one is growing up fast…maybe a little too fast. So what should you do when your child comes to you with the exciting news? Here are the things every parent should know about losing that first tooth.

When do kids start losing their baby teeth?
Children will lose their first tooth around age 6. They’ll continue to lose 3–4 teeth per year until they have lost all 20 of their baby teeth by about age 12.

Which teeth fall out first?
Baby teeth usually fall out in the order they came in. The front bottom teeth are often the first to go. The last teeth to fall out are usually the big molars in the back of the mouth.

Does losing a tooth hurt?
Losing a tooth shouldn’t hurt very much. If it is very painful, it probably means that your child is trying to pull a tooth that’s not quite ready to come out. If the pain gets bad, you can put an over-the-counter, pain-relieving gel on the gum surrounding the tooth. Make sure it’s for children, and don’t use it too much or too often.

Should I pull a loose tooth?
The short answer is no. It can tear the gum tissue around the tooth and cause injury. Allow your child to gently wiggle their tooth. But tell them they should let a tooth fall out on its own.

What happens if my child swallows their tooth?
Nothing, really. Accidentally swallowing a tooth isn’t a big deal. It will simply pass through the body.

Will there be a lot of blood when my child loses their tooth?
There shouldn’t be very much blood at all. When there is a lot of blood, it is usually caused by forcing a tooth out before it is ready. To stop bleeding, have your child bite down on gauze, cotton ball or a clean cloth until the bleeding slows.

When do permanent teeth start to grow in?
Usually it takes a few weeks for the permanent tooth to begin to poke through. It will take a few months more for the tooth to fully grow in.

What to do when i see a permanent tooth erupting before the baby tooth has fallen out?
You need to visit your dentist and get a examination done for your child. In some cases it may be advisable to remove the baby tooth to make way for the permanent one.

M.Ch - Paediatric Surgery, MS - General Surgery
Pediatric Surgeon, Kolkata
Lower abdominal pain in children even in the right lower quadrant does not necessarily mean appendicitis. Common causes of such pain are tonsilitis, roundworm infestation and constipation and rare cause is vasculitis (Henoch Schonlein Purpura) where there are also rashes all over the body with itching. So you should consult a Pediatric Surgeon before anyone else. Probably your kid will not need surgery!

I am in Bangalore. My daughter (2yrs 10months) has fever since Tuesday morning. She has cough as well. The pediatrician said its a regular flu and prescribed dologel for fever less than 102 and meftal for >102 fever. Earlier the fever came at 4 hrs intervals. Since yesterday morning , her fever came at intervals of around 7-8 hours. Is the line of treatment ok?

Dear You are in safe hands. The treatment advised by your Paediatrician is correct. Fever takes time to resolve. Follow the doctor's advice and if you feel you can visit for a follow up review with your doctor. Dr Srinathks

Dear all, I have few set of doubts for baby feeding, I am blessed with baby boy, now he is 5 months old, he is not properly taking mother feeding, and he is not sleeping during day time, per day he is sleeping only 7 hrs that too during night time. When he born his weight is 3.50 kg now he is 4kg 800grms. When he was in 2 months doctors? advice to to give powder milk (enfamil a+). We are feeding using feeding bottle. Please help us to increase baby weight, and increasing mother feeding regards,

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
I feel bad that due to improper counselling parents often do weird things with their beloved babies. Upto six months of age, exclusive breast feeding is recommended. I am surprised that someone has recommended powder milk. The focus has to be to increase mother's milk and keep the baby on breast as long as possible.Even water should not be offered to the baby. The mother should drink extra water/liquids like juices/soups etc and keep herself well hydrated for optimum milk production. Also she should take a wholesome diet and never worry that her milk is not sufficient for the baby. If the baby is passing urine frequently, passing stool 6-10 times per day and gaining weight, breast milk production is enough. regarding sleep pattern, it is a very good thing that the baby is sleeping 7 hours at a stretch. The baby should be awake during the day and interact with the environment. Dont worry. Sleep patterns change. Your baby will start sleeping during the day too.

Can we apply odomos on babies face and body? Just 7months old baby.

Can we apply odomos on babies face and body? Just 7months old baby.
Better not to apply permethrine or any other chemical applications to small baby's skin as absorption is more because of large surface area.

4 Myths and Facts About Asthma You Should be Aware of

MBBS, MD -Pulmonary Medicine-Tuberculosis ,Respiratory Disease Medicine , Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD), European Diploma in Respiratory Medicine

4 Myths and Facts About Asthma You Should be Aware of

On the occasion of World Asthma Day (3rd May, 2016), I would like to break a few myths related around Asthma which otherwise people generally believe to be true.

Myth #1 -  Asthma is a communicable disease

Fact #1 -  Asthma is an allergic disease and is neither contagious (infectious) or communicable (passed on from one person to another)

Myth #2 - Inhalers are addictive

Fact #2 - Absolutely wrong! Inhalers are not addictive but it is a good habit to keep control over asthma and use your inhalers as prescribed by your doctor. Also, contrary to popular belief that using inhalers on a regular basis reduces their effectiveness, inhalers continue to be equally effective on a regular basis.

Myth #3 - Inhalers are expensive

Fact #3 - Again, absolutely incorrect! Inhalers are in fact cheaper when compared to other drugs.

Myth #4 - Inhalers are given to patients who face Chronic Asthma

Fact #4 - Wrong! Inhalers should be used from a very early stage itself to prevent progression of the disease.

I hope this tip helped bust atleast a few notions that most people have about Asthma and that you are now better informed about this condition. In case you would like to ask me anything or discuss your or your loved one's case in detail, feel free to 'Consult' privately with me.

Common Side Effects of Uterine Fibroids

Certification in IVF & Infertility, Diplomate Gynae Laparoscopy, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG), MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS

Common Side Effects of Uterine Fibroids

Many women develop uterine fibroids by the time they hit the age of 50 years and above. These are non-cancerous growths that may occur in the uterus. Most women go through severe bleeding and pain as well as discomfort as a result of these fibroids. Age, family history of the same condition, obesity or being overweight, eating habits and even ethnicity play a large role in deciding the risk of each individual patient. These fibroids can grow in the submucosal, intramural and subserosal areas.

Following are the common side effects of uterine fibroids:

  1. Frequent urination: Due to the pressure of the fibroids on the uterus, the patient may experience a constant feeling of fullness in the lower pelvic area of the body, which may lead to frequent filling of the bladder. This gives rise to frequent trips to the washroom for urination.
  2. Heavy Bleeding: Severe bleeding is one of the most common causes of the presence of these kinds of fibroids. The patient may experience a lot of bleeding during menstrual periods, as well as pain and cramps the rest of the time. The periods will also be very painful when there are fibroids in the uterus or the uterine lining.
  3. Painful Intercourse: It is a well-known fact that any kind of infection or growth as well as sores and other such ailments can lead to vaginal dryness as well as pain during sexual intercourse. This is true for uterine fibroids as well, which can lead to severe pain during sexual activity. These fibroids can also give rise to pain in the lumbar or lower back region.
  4. Abdomen Swelling: The abdomen may go through significant swelling in such a condition and the patient may even look like she is pregnant. The growth can push the shape of the abdomen outwards and create a full feeling.
  5. Pregnancy Complications: The presence of uterine fibroids can give rise to several complications during pregnancy and even after child birth. One of the most common problems in this case is bleeding, followed by more severe outcomes like miscarriage. The women suffering from uterine fibroids are at greater risk of undergoing a caesarean section for the delivery of the baby. The baby may also be born breech and a premature delivery may take place.
  6. Infertility: This is also a rare side effect of the uterine fibroids and is generally seen only in very severe cases.
  7. Cancer: Only one in every 1000 cases might transform into malignant tumours. These uterine fibroids are generally known to be non-malignant.

Any symptoms must be reported to a gynaecologist at the earliest to avoid any serious complications.

My son is almost a yr old. Birthday on 6th may. He crawls and stands up holding something, but hasn' t started walking yet. Wat seems to be wrong?

Pediatrician, Pune
Nothing wrong, only god has not made everyone to be like tendulkar, there are some amir khans, some amitabh bacchans, some lata mangeshkars and many million unknown people, but they are not the same, some children walk early, some little late, if it is within the average normal range, we have just a habit to compare and needlessly worry.

Warm saline gargle, lukewarm water to drink and saline nasal drops to instill in each nostrils, if nostrils are block, are safest. Usually cold passes away in 4-6 days.
