I have a problem and don't know what is it, my throat becomes dry at the time of sleeping and I start coughing badly, sometimes it blocks my breath?

I have a problem and don't know what is it, my throat becomes dry at the time of sleeping and I start coughing badly,...
There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water. The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. In general you should: -Take healthy balanced diet...like boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. -Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. -get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold -staying at home will keep you from spreading germs -drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep -Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Do steam inhalation once or twice daily Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

I cleaned my ear with cotton swabs and it's bleeding. I found that it's bleeding when I was cleaning the cotton swab became red. I have less hearing in that ear right now. What must I do now. Does it need any special attention or it can naturally heal? Explain me in detail.

It is not advisable to clean ones ear by themselves as it is a blind procedure. Get somebody to do it for you. If you do it all by yourself there is a chance to injury the ear. Get an ent surgeons opinion who will diagnose what the problem is. The injury if at all it is there will heal on its own. Do not allow any water to enter the ear for about 2 weeks.

Nasal polyp may or may not require surgery depending on its size, site etc. In case it needs surgery it is done by endoscopy. In a corporate hospital where I work it may cost around sixty to seventy thousands minimum. These surgeries are sophisticated. U have to stay in hospital for 1 day. U can start all normal activities within 7 days.

Pls see an ENT doctor. Blunt injuries to throat without voice change can happen but nonetheless are does not mean all is fine. A quick endoscopy will tell that there is no Hematoma (blood in the lower part of throat: Hypopharynx).

I read somewhere that wearing headphones for an hour can increase the bacteria in your by 700 times, I wear headphones daily for a minimum of 5-6 hours, I am also suffering from tinnitus which may have been caused by headphone use, please suggest how to handle hygiene issues caused by overuse of headphones.

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
Ear canal is dark and narrow recess so air and light doesn't reach inside properly so over it if you cover it for prolonged period regularly than the issue worsens. Try to use headphones which doesn't go inside the ear but remains over it so some air escapes inside. Reduce duration of use and remove frequently while using. Tinnitus may be a bad sign caused by early damage to hearing nerve. Get a report called audiogram done and stop listening to loud sounds.

Lybrate-user if you suffer from tonsillitis >4 times / years ideally get yourself operated as the tonsils are harbouring the bacterial spore which when climate favours cause infection which at times you transfer the cold to your family / friends in close contact with you. Do get yourself operated after consulting an ent surgeon.

I am 53 year old man. Doctor detected an ulcer at food pipe through endoscopy. Medicine is running. Pl suggest about ...
When you have an esophageal or food pipe ulcer, you need to follow a low-fat diet. Fat in food delays stomach emptying and decreases pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, or les, which is the valve that separates your stomach and your esophagus. Both of these issues increase the risk of acid reflux and esophageal irritation. A low-fat diet for esophageal ulcers means limiting your intake of fried foods, high-fat meats such as bacon, high-fat desserts, and added fat such as oil and butter. It also helps if you eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to limit stomach pressure and possible reflux. Foods to eat: Your esophageal reflux diet should include a variety of things from all the food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean sources of protein and low-fat dairy products. Eating an array of healthy foods ensures that your body gets all the nutrients, it needs to promote healing and overall good health. If you experience pain when swallowing, be sure to chew your food thoroughly. If that doesn't help, you may benefit from eating softer or pureed foods, such as stewed meats, mashed potatoes, soft-cooked rice or pasta, soft-cooked vegetables, ripe bananas and applesauce. Foods not to take: In addition to fat, certain foods also increase the risk of acid reflux. To minimize esophageal discomfort, you may need to limit these foods in your diet. Chocolate contains methylxanthine, a substance that reduces les pressure. Coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated, may increase reflux and irritation. Mint, carbonated beverages, acidic foods and alcohol also can aggravate reflux. Whether you should include these foods in your diet depends on your individual tolerance. Watch those calories: Being overweight or obese also increases the risk of reflux and irritation of esophageal ulcers. Limiting your calorie intake to lose weight may also help alleviate symptoms. Your calorie needs for weight loss -- which range from 1, 000 to 1, 600 calories a day -- depend on your age, gender and activity level. Your doctor can help you determine how many calories you need to lose weight and help improve symptoms related to an esophageal ulcer.

Dust allergy is partly genetic and partly environmental. Thus it never goes away. With better, less dusty environment  the extent if the problem gets reduced. Medicines help to downregulate the immune response of your body to these environmental allergens. Long term lifestyle  changes with gradually tapering medication  helps to tackle chronic sinus problems.  Start taking Steam inhalation twice a day. *For chronic allergic rhinosinusitis you will need to take a long term course of antibiotics  together  with Nasal sprays. *You will need to avoid dusty environment  and dust mites, animal dander etc. Regular cleaning of AC air filters. Wearing mask while driving 2 wheelers/working in dusty  areas Medical  management  is done for 3 months and then patients  condition is reviewed.  Intermittent treatment is not beneficial  in the long run. Around 30 %of people with allergic rhinitis  will develop Asthma if not treated. But majority of patients with asthma are allergic to dust. Active treatment  of nasal allergy reduces Asthma attacks and medicine requirements. This improve  quality of life. Hope this helps Take care.
