It is better for diabetics to avoid sugar/ honey/ jaggery/ sabudana as these are source of empty calories, cause spike in blood glucose levels & lead to obesity. sweets/ chocolates/ cold drinks/ ice cream should also be avoided. In case of sweet cravings it is better to include a piece of sweet fruit like banana/ mango/ grapes/ watermelon/ jackfruit/ dates. You may also have artificial sweetener (stevia) if still sugar taste is needed.

Mr. Lybrate-user, to suggest a specific diet, I need to know following details, fbs< pp bs & hba1c%, present diet, extent of exercise, based on those details I can give a diet plan. A person with diabetes has to avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks, fructose corn syrup containing products, highly processed foods and high fat milk products. Normal range of blood pressure is between 90/60 to 140/90, anything above or below is is abnormal. Many factors can affect blood pressure, including: 1) The amount of water and salt you have in your body 2) The condition of your kidneys, nervous system, or blood vessels 3) Your hormone levels 4) your lifestyle - smoking, drinking, exercise  Stress, less sleep, smoking, alcohol, overweight, heart, kidney problems, lack of physical exercise. All of these can cause High blood pressure. You are more likely to be told your blood pressure is too high as you get older. This is because your blood vessels become stiffer as you age. When that happens, your blood pressure goes up.  Highblood pressure increases your chance of having a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney disease, or early death. So my advice to you would be 1) Keep a BP record daily for at least one week & Every time you need to measure BP twice with a gap of 15 mins rest. 2) Basic tests should be one to rule out cardiac / kidney issues & find if there is any treatable cause of High blood pressure 3) unless any recent evaluation has been done I would advice these test ECG ECHO Lipid Profile TSH KFT  Renal doppler  Get back to me with a detailed history and  old / new records For Now Keep taking the same medicines which you are taking .plus Start lifestyle changes & diet changes Emphasizes vegetables, fruits, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, nuts, and vegetable oils. Limits sodium, sweets, sugary beverages, and red meats. Along with this, other lifestyle changes can help lower your blood pressure. They include staying at a healthy weight, exercising, and not smoking.

Stroke Due To Hypertension - How To Prevent It?

MD - General Medicine, MBBS

Stroke Due To Hypertension - How To Prevent It?

High blood pressure, which is often a result of hypertension, is the leading risk factor for a stroke, which in turn leads to severe and long-term disability, including death. Managing your blood sugar levels is the most critical thing you can do to lessen your risk of a stroke, and you should leave no stone unturned in keeping your blood pressure at optimum levels.

What causes a stroke

A stroke, which is often referred to as a brain attack, takes place when the supply of blood to a particular region of the brain is cut off. The brain cells which are deprived of the oxygen and glucose die, and when the ailment is not caught early, a permanent damage to the brain can follow.

How is high blood pressure related to a stroke

Uncontrolled blood pressure levels can increase the risk of a stroke by about four to six times. With the passage of time, hypertension causes atherosclerosis as well as hardening of major arteries. This often results in blockages of small blood vessels present in the brain. With high blood pressure for a long period of time, the blood vessels of the brain become weak and burst. This way the risk of a stroke is directly related to the high levels of blood pressure.

What can you do to keep your blood pressure under control

There is a  lot you can do to keep the chance of a stroke at bay. But the first thing you should try doing is keeping your blood pressure level normal. Some simple lifestyle changes can help you to lead a risk-free life and therefore, you should first aim at shedding off those extra pounds along your waistline.

In general, a man with a waistline measuring over 40 inches and a woman with that over 35 inches is at a higher risk of suffering from high blood pressure as well as a stroke. You should exercise regularly for at least half an hour and eat a well-regulated diet loaded with fibre, proteins, potassium and Omega-3 fatty acids. Stay away from junk food and maintain a food diary where you can jot down your honest food habits.

It is very important to lower down your high blood pressure in order to avoid risks of stroke. But if you fail to do so even after following a healthy routine, then it is crucial to consult a doctor who can help you by prescribing medications that are right for your medical condition.
