Never Ignore These 6 Alarming Causes Of Nose Bleed!

Though nosebleeds are usually not a cause for serious concern, it can sometimes be a scary experience and cause a lot of anxiety. The nose is home to a lot of blood vessels and being fragile they bleed easily. Nosebleeds, however, can be a cause of concern if they happen regularly. While a few factors can be taken care of easily, there are a few rare cases that are actually alarming.

  1. Liver infection: This condition can be one of the rare causes of nosebleed.
  2. Conditions hampering blood clot formation: There are certain medical conditions in which the blood clot formation does not take place effectively and thus the bleeding incidents can happen with minor causes as well.
  3. Blood thinning medication: People having blood thinning medicines are more prone to experiencing an episode of nose bleed for obvious reasons.
  4. Excessive scratching or sneezing: This might cause the nasal wall to rupture, causing minor bleeding.
  5. Excessive alcohol consumption: In people who consume alcohol in an excessive amount, nose bleeding might occur as an after effect.
  6. Blood cancer/ leukemia: In some cases of leukemia, the patient might experience nosebleed along with other complications.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Precautions And Self Management For Ear Barotrauma

MS-ENT, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Noida
Precautions And Self Management For Ear Barotrauma

When you travel in an airplane or just come out of the swimming pool, your ears may sometimes block up and even be painful. This is what is known ear barotrauma and is caused by pressure differences inside and outside the ear drum. Severe cases may cause damage to the ear and impede your hearing.

Symptoms of ear barotrauma: Ear barotrauma usually occurs when the Eustachian tube is blocked due to differences in air pressure. The Eustachian tube is a long narrow tube that runs from the middle of your ear to the pharynx or the back of the throat and is thus very important in relevance to the ear, nose and throat. Thus ear barotrauma can also translate to pain in the ear and throat as well.

Some of the symptoms are:

Precautions and self treatment: There are certain steps you can take to either prevent barotrauma or reduce the symptoms, these are:
yawning or gulping. This is very helpful when air pressure differences are caused in cases of travelling by aircraft.

  1. Inhale slowly and then exhale while your mouth is closed and you are holding your nostrils closed by fingers. This will help increase the pressure within the tube to try and open it forcefully.
  2. Sucking on candy is another way to prevent barotraumas as you are constantly swallowing and keeping your Eustachian tube from being blocked in the first place.
  3. Keep a few chewing gums handy and has similar effects on your ears as it forces the Eustachian tube to remain open despite pressure differences.
  4. After diving or swimming, come out of the water slowly.  Scuba divers and deep swimmers need to come up slowly to ensure that the Eustachian tube is given enough time to acclimatize and slowly come back to normal.

Usually, ear barotrauma goes away automatically after sometime and no medications are required. However, if symptoms still persist, it is best to go to a relevant doctor or a health care provider for pain relief and long term solutions.

One doctor advised me to use dewax drops but if I use that drops I feel like my ear are blocked and I can note hear properly.

Yes, when you use these drops they soak into the earwax and debris and this increases its volume sometimes completely occluding the ear canal thus decreasing the hearing. At this juncture you must meet an ENT Specialist to evacuate the softened wax & debris using microsuctioning technique. This is the safest way of extracting earwax.

Not only arogyavardhini vati or manjisthadi quath gives you results. You have to follow some diet andneed little bit changes in your lifestyle. Avoid oily, spicy, junk food, packaged food, take bland diet. Honey with tulsi (holy Basil) 8-10 leaves in the morning empty stomach. For details can private consult.

Is there any treatment or home remedy for snoring. My mother has been facing this issue for many years.

Pulmonologist, Visakhapatnam
Apart from snoring if she has any sleeping disturbances, breathlessness during night time, frequent awakening in the night, drowsiness in the daytime then she might be suffering from OSA. You must consult a pulmonologist for complete evaluation and management. Only snoring, then it can be habitual snoring or OSA. Better to consult a pulmonologist for complete evaluation and management whatever may be the cause ask her to sleep In a lateral lying down position. Better to remove the pillow and to sleep with head end of the bet elevated to 30 degree position. These might have some benefits.

Hi, Lybrate user, did you get it done any audiological evaluation like audiometry or impedance to rule out the existing pathology. It would give you the clear idea about the problem. Urgently get it done, cause sometimes sudden hearing loss goes undetected like this. Thanks.

Drink some fruit juice before work out. Or gatorade or horlicks. If you still feel light headed. Get checked for diabetes with blood sugar testing. If you feel a reeling sensation. See your ent consultant.
