Back Pain - How To Subdue It?

Physiotherapist, Navi Mumbai
Back Pain - How To Subdue It?

Mild to serious pain or uneasiness in the lower back region is known as lumbago or lower back pain. The pain might be (A) acute (sudden and extreme) or (B) chronic, if it has lasted over three months. People who do a lot of physical exertion are often affected by it. Also, back pain may occur as you age.

Physiotherapy is often tried as a first solution to persistent lower back pain. Most doctors advise a patient of back pain for a four-week session as a conservative approach before pursuing aggressive treatment options such as surgery. In most cases, physiotherapy brings relief from back pain in as early as two to three sessions. A four week physiotherapy programme ensures that the underlying cause of back pain is well-addressed and you don’t get the back pain all over again.

The motive behind physiotherapy is to reduce inflammation, pain and increased function of the back. Physiotherapy also teaches a patient certain good practices in order to negate the possibility of getting the pain back.

Two Forms of Physiotherapy-

1. Passive Therapy: This is a form of physiotherapy that is usually used as first phase of pain treatment includes application of ice packs, electrical stimulation and heat application. These are the very first steps taken for immediate pain relief, before moving to routine physiotherapy that involves following an exercise schedule.

2. Active Therapy: Active physiotherapy which is usually Phase two of your treatment includes undertaking of specific exercise schedule and certain stretching activities. This approach includes exercise therapy mostly done to rehabilitate the back muscles and spinal cord. The exact schedule is decided by the physiotherapist, depending on the location and duration of pain.

How Physiotherapy works for back pain?

A Physiotherapist will usually use a cocktail of the following after a thorough assessment of your pain, its location, cause and involved muscles and nerves:

1. Strengthening Exercises For Back Pain: Certain prescribed exercises such as lumbar stabilization or other exercises should be done for about fifteen to twenty minutes on a regular basis to strengthen your back muscles. These strengthen your core muscles and help in lower back pain as well. These can help in relieving pain if done right. This is why you should get directions from professionals or qualified physical therapists.

2. Stretching Exercises For Back Pain: It is advised to stretch your hamstring muscles every now and then if you suffer from back pain. It is a very simple form of stretching but you may forget to do it every day. This is why you should schedule your exercises and adhere to the schedule. Incorporate it into your daily routine. There may be other stretches that you can look into or consult your physical therapist to advise you on.

3. Specialised Techniques: Sometimes, physiotherapist may use a combination of special techniques like manual therapy, neuro-dynamic techniques to ease your nerves and muscles in the pain-affected area.

4. Heat and Cold Therapy: It is one of the most common types of therapy that is used and is mostly used towards the initial period of pain. While some may find heat therapy more useful, others may resort to cold therapies. Sometimes, people use alternate therapy. This therapy is recommended to be performed once every two hours.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a cause of back pain in adolescents and young adults. Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of chronic inflammation of the spine and the sacroiliac joints chronic inflammation in these areas causes pain and stiffness in and around the spine, including the neck, middle back, lower back, and buttocks. Over time, chronic inflammation of the spine (spondylitis) can lead to a complete cementing together (fusion) of the vertebrae, a process referred to as ankylosis. Ankylosis causes loss of mobility of the spine. Pt treatment deep breathing for lung expansion and stretching exercises to improve spine and joint mobility. Are also advised to sleep on a firm mattress and avoid the use of a pillow in order to prevent spine curvature. Aerobic exercise is generally encouraged as it promotes full expansion of the breathing muscles and opens the airways of the lungs.

That might be due to or it might be due to ankle pain. Our suggestion would be to do hot water fermentation along with cold (ice) therapy. You shall also keep a pillow under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes. Can a person walk without any aid if she (55 age) is not treated surgically for intertrochanteric femur fracture after the bone gets joined (or malunited as surgery was not done)? If the patient is confident they can definitely walk. However for safer reasons it is better to keep a tripod or tetrapod stick (stick with 3 legs or stick with four legs) I have a long time shoulder injury bt it's not recovered properly still I have a little bit pain it is called as peri arthritis shoulder and for that you can do hot water fermentation and ice therapy at home. You shall also take physiotherapy treatment called shortwave diathermy which would help you to get relieved with pain but when I am playing cricket suddenly I am getting back pain. It looks like you are anaemic. And also you have to check with your vitamin and calcium, if the bones are weak then automatically the pain gets triggered more as there is less energy during any metabolic activity. I am suffering from back pain from last 2 months as I feel this is coming when I masturbate myself this must be due to your muscular strain and posture and it may not be due to any other reasons. It is better to correct your addictive behaviour by consulting the right physician. For the time being for the back pain, apply ice.

I am having pain in knee when walk for long hours or sit for long hours. I am diagnosed with tibial spine prominence. What is the treatment for this.

As arthritis is very common that you get generally bilaterally. Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. We also advise you to use knee cap which would help to prevent the knee from damaging further and also to maintain the quadriceps muscle tone. You can take ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics which would help to heal the damaged cartilages alon g with shortwave diathermy which would help to improve the blood circulation. You can take ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics which would help to heal the damaged cartilages along with shortwave diathermy which would help to improve the blood circulation. It looks like you are anaemic. That's the reason the knee goes for genu recurvatum which is nothing but backward bowing of legs. This can be prevented by wearing knee brace to support the knee from going backwards while you walk or climb stairs. Check with your haemoglobin levels and also with your calcium & vitamin levels in your body by consulting a general physician.
