Can beer be a healthy drink? Despite the common myths surrounding alcohol consumption and the adverse effects that it has on a person in the long run, a controlled and well-balanced intake of beer is not as bad as it would seem.

Here are a few reasons proving that beer can be healthy for you if taken in the right amount and quantity.

  1. In comparison to other alcoholic beverages, beer is relatively healthier for your kidneys. As a matter of fact, studies show that a bottle of beer can actually reduce the risk of acquiring kidney stones by up to 40%.
  2. Fiber, as we all know, plays a vital role in digestion. The presence of up to one gram of soluble fiber in just a 30 ml glass of beer (dark beer, in particular) makes the beverage very beneficial for digestion.
  3. Fiber present in beer can also help reduce the level of LDL cholesterol (a harmful proponent of cholesterol).
  4. It has been proved that beer is a rich source of various B vitamins like vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.
  5. The presence of both nicotinic acid and Lactoflavin in beer makes it an effective cure for insomnia.
  6. Beer is also helpful in the prevention of blood clots.
  7. The presence of high levels of silicon in beer is responsible for bestowing a stronger bone density.
  8. Studies have concluded that beer can also reduce the risk of suffering a heart attack.
  9. Unlike their non-drinking counterparts, beer drinkers are less vulnerable of experiencing dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

What are the recommended safe limits of Beer?

  1. Men should drink no more than 14 units of Beer per week, these units should be spread out through the week and they should have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
  2. Women should drink no more than 14 units of Beer per week, these units should be spread out through the week and they should have at least two alcohol-free days a week.
  3. Pregnant women or women trying to conceive should not drink alcohol at all. If they do choose to drink, to minimise the risk to the baby, they should not drink more than 1-2 units of beer once or twice a week and should not get drunk.
  4. Despite the above people with increased Triglyceride, Uric Acid should be restricted for consumption of alcohol. People with fatty liver patient with other medication for hypertension, etc. also should refrain from drinking.

People with diabetes who drink should follow these alcohol consumption guidelines:

  1. Do not drink more than two drinks of alcohol in a one-day period if you are a man, or one drink if you are a woman.
  2. Drink beer only with food.
  3. Drink slowly.
  4. Avoid "sugary" mixed drinks, sweet wines, or cordials.

OCD - It stands for obsessive compulsive disorder. This disorder is characterized by uncontrollable, unwanted and repetitive thoughts or behaviours. You can characterize it as OCD if your obsessive thoughts persist for more than an hour a day. There are over 1 million cases of OCD reported in India alone. There are two components to OCD - obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are the repetitive thoughts that occur and compulsions are the urges you have to satisfy the obsessions. For example, a fear of being contaminated by germs is an obsession and washing your hands to the point it is pruning is the compulsion. Here are some ways you can combat OCD:

1. Practice relaxation techniques:

Stress can trigger symptoms or make them worse. Mindful meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques can help lower your overall stress and tension levels and help you manage your urges.

2. Face your fears:

Avoiding your fears make them seem scarier. Instead, expose yourself to you triggers and try to resist the urge to complete the compulsive behaviour.

3. Refocus your attention:

When you are experiencing OCD thoughts and urges, try shifting your thoughts to something else. It could be exercise, reading or listening to music among other things. Continue this for 15 minutes then reassess your urges.

4. Anticipate urges:

Anticipating the urges by creating a solid mental picture of you performing the act previously so that you do not go and do it again.

5. Create a worry period:

Rather than trying to suppress your obsessions, set aside one or two 10 minute periods in your day to worry about them. Consciously delay thinking about your obsessions until then.

People who are constantly troubled by the fear of physical illness or who excessively feel worried about their health are commonly referred to as hypochondriacs. This phenomenon is called somatic symptom disorder, also known as hypochondria or hypochondriasis. Despite the evidence of medical tests proving that they do not suffer from any disease or illness, hypochondriacs are perpetually worried about their health. This is mainly because of their misinterpretation of minor health problems or normal body functions as something serious. Somatic symptom disorder affects both males and females equally, and it usually happens during early adulthood.

Causes and symptoms: Their complaints may range from minor issues like pain or stress to more serious problems concerning breathing or headaches. Hypochondriacs rarely try to deceive themselves, and they genuinely believe that they have health problems, however unrealistic their beliefs might be. The exact causes are indefinite and unknown, but they generally arise from considerable physical or sexual abuse in their early childhood. Moreover, parents or close relatives suffering from the disorder may also induce such fears into the child, who would eventually behave in a similar pattern later in adulthood.

Diagnosis: Diagnosis of the disorder can be very troublesome, mainly because of their inherent conviction that they are suffering from physical illness. However, the disorder can be treated through proper supportive care or psychotherapy. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs are also used sometimes.

Dealing with the disorder: Hypochondria can often lead to a chronic condition, which can be long lasting. Although there are no definite ways of preventing it, there is one method to reduce the intensity of the symptoms and help patients cope up with the disorder. It is by providing them a supportive and understanding environment, one in which they can fight the distress and trouble that comes along with the somatic symptom disorder.

Hello Doctor, I am 25 years old male going through some mental situation which I don't able to understand. I don't able to keep myself motivated towards anything I do like my job, my studies or every goal of life which I want to achieve. Full day I feel like my mind is stressed and full of tensions. I sleep more than usual (around 9-10 hours). In the evening time I feel like little motivated and plan a lot of things to do in upcoming day like wake up early, do exercise, start me work, etc but when the net day comes and I ended up waking late and all the plannings gone and I again become apathetic towards life. I don't know what is going on with my mental condition and this is happening from last 5-6 months after I relocated from my hometown to another town in the search of job. Also I am living alone. We need to see if what you are describing is an adjustment disorder, a unipolar depressive episode with personality issues or a depressive episode in the context of a soft bipolarity. It is natural to feel low and miss the person you have lost. However if it is interfering with your sleep, studies or general well being, or if you feel suicidal, you need to consult a psychiatrist. It is common to feel low, cry, feel like you are alone, or lose your self confidence. Usually time is the best healer. However if things are too difficult to handle you should talk to a psychiatrist or counselor. Confide in someone close to you, who will support you in this difficult time. I and my husband became a parent of twins at age 45 and 49 respectively, through surrogacy in last April, after a childless marriage of 20 years. Initially it was a joyous moment for me personally but I am currently facing severe moments of anxiety, sleeplessness, lack of interest, sorrow, fatigue etc leading to me doubting my becoming a parent at this late age. I have severe doubts on my capacity to cope and the prospects of a future to bring two babies to adulthood is making me feel depressed and anxious. I am not sure how I come to this state despite support being received from my parents, husband, maids (2 of them to support). I need to come out of this situation asap so that I can get back to providing quality care to my children while being able to enjoy the journey of doing so.

Saying is "Time heals everything" but it doesn't. I didn't heal with time. Didn't manage my emotions very well. I kept all the things inside didn't told anyone anything. All is tough for me these days. Can not trust anyone easily. Didn't get emotionally attached to anyone. I just feel like robot with daily routine work and no emotions. I blocked everything in past. Now I wanted to feel but I can't. Wanted to connect emotionally but I can not. I am not seeing anything positive happening in my future. Future is just another terror for me. I do not know how I am going to cope with all the things. May be if I just had someone to lean on. I would be better may be. Toughest thing is living a life like everything is fine. What can I ask at this point. HELP.

Sir I am just 21 years old & was in severe depression for 6 month I have tried my best to get out of it but evrytime I failed .At the last stage of depression my legs got heavy & felt tingling and numbness. I have consulted many neurologist but no result. Finally I consulted a psychiatrist and he has put me medication since 35 days still I am feeling emotionless & tingling in my hand and legs. Doctor said my steronin level got down to zero. I am taking the medicine still I am thinking of suicide as I am not getting emotional pleasure and I have lost interest in everything. After taking the medication somewhat it manage the symptoms I used to get earlier like giving face expression like a joker & feeling self created god .Now also I am smiling without any reason & not getting the views of others. I have attached the prescription report given by my consultant psychiatrist.

Dear lybrate-user, You are in proper hands of a psychiatrist now. You are taking antidepressants like Nexito and Prothiaden. 35 days is too early to expect full results. Please wait and your psychiatrist will change the dose or the drug or add another, if necessary, next time you visit. You need to visit your psychiatrist many times before you feel the full result. Please talk about your suicidal ideas with someone. Inform that person about the drugs, you are prescribed. It will be nice if you could deposit all your tablets with her/him, and take daily.

I am feeling very low, mentally. I haven't done anything in my life, the girl I like, left me and got a good job. I failed two years in college, people like to not talk with me, I don't have anyone to share my story. People are very judgmental this days. I can do better than the whole batch do. I lost my respect, my money and my love. Nothing left. But I want to rebuild all but now mental health is weaker to do new things, I feels sad, I like to go and do things for myself but I can't, I can't understand myself what I want, what I wanna do and what I am doing. I have no controls of my thoughts process. I am feeling depressed because I don't have a clue what direction I am going. People of my age going America and getting job in MNC. I feels very lonely, I can't take this more. I wanna free, happy with no worries, I don't wanna money, I wanna happiness. Hi Lybrate user First of all, try to increase your self- esteem and in order to increase your self - esteem, you have to challenge and change the negative beliefs you have about yourself. At first you may feel like it is impossible but there are a lot of different techniques you can try to help youself - Do some activities daily that you enjoy. Try not to compare yourself to other people. Try to do regular exercise, eat healthy and get enough sleep. Set a goal for yourself and try to achieve them, it may be small but when you achieve them, you feel satisfied and proud of yourself and certainly you will feel more positive about yourself. Thanks.

Hi I am australian citizen and divorced living in india. My 7 years daughter lives in brisbane with my ex and new mom. I am brahmin. My parents want to me to get marry. I am 32 years old. I am a mechanical engineer. Not working. Need advice which kind of guy should I marry. I am brahmin gujarati. Brother married and mom teacher and dad doctor. Mom dad retired. And brother is an engineer working in bangalore. My parents are sick aged. I miss my daughter a lot. I do not know the reason why my ex not alowing me to talk with her. Depressed. Thanks

Hi lybrate-user! I can definitely feel the pain you are going through. Usually when divorced if nothing is wrong on your side, then the judgement usually is for the child to live with you and I wonder why that was not the case to you and why you were not allowed to see her even monthly once. Why could not you appeal again at least to see or talk to your daughter monthly once or twice. Try discussing this with your lawyer. I am suggesting you because I am thinking myself in your situation. Ok regarding choosing a guy as your life partner you need to first understand the person's character well only then you can marry him. First know about his education, status, background of him and his family, any bad habits, then finally build up communication through phone or at your home. Be frank to him about your expectations and ask him to be very loyal and honest in disclosing his expectations as well. If you both finally understand each other well, when you get the confidence and satisfaction to marry him, you can go ahead and start your living. One more suggestion if you think your 7 year old daughter would be safe, her father and new mom will definitely take care of her then, you need not bother because she will definitely come to see you after she grows up. But if in case you are worried about her welfare then you can definitely seek a lawyer to apply just to talk or see your daughter at least once in a month just because you are her blood mother.
