You love your mother because she gave birth to you and you know her from birth. Also she is your well wisher. But your wife looks at her like another human being and both of them have negativity because they both are possessive about you and want to control you. Your wife will behave based on how your mother deals with her when you are not there. This is an age old women psychology. Keep them apart. Do not try to unite them. Tell them to sort out differences but you do not take sides nor try to interfere. You will be bashed up. Women Psychology. Relax.

Alcohol Problem - How to Identify If Someone Close to You Is Suffering?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Alcohol Problem - How to Identify If Someone Close to You Is Suffering?

Do you worry about your friend or relative’s drinking habits? You are not alone. There are people who struggle for years with the same question - How can I tell if the person I love is an alcoholic or not?
Well, the good news is that you don’t need to be a medical professional to figure out the right answer to this vital question. Read on to find simple ways to know whether your loved one suffers from alcohol addiction.

First up is a short quiz about drinking habits, developed by Dr. John Ewing to identify alcohol addiction. Treat this as a pointer and take your loved one to an expert, if it points towards alcohol addiction. You can ask these questions directly to your loved one, or you can answer these questions on their behalf.

According to the developers, one "yes" to the four quiz questions signals a problem, and more than one “yes” means that it's time for you or your loved one to get professional help.

  1. Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?
  4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?”

There are many signs of a serious drinking problem. These include certain behaviours such as:

  1. Drinking just for getting drunk
  2. Drinking alone
  3. Keeping alcohol consumption a secret
  4. Drinking to escape problems
  5. Hiding alcohol bottles
  6. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms like getting irritated or experiencing nervousness, nausea, getting shakes, breaking out into a cold sweat, and getting hallucinations when unable to source alcohol
  7. Having problems at work, school, or home, as a result of alcohol consumption
  8. Losing interest in activities you or your friend used to enjoy
  9. Having blackouts due to heavy drinking
  10. Anger and extreme irritation

Other extreme behaviors to watch out for are:

  1. Being able to drink an awful lot of alcohol
  2. Trouble stopping once your loved one starts drinking
  3. A powerful urge to drink

There is another scientific way to determine, if your loved one is an alcoholic. In the US, medical professionals commonly use a criteria, listed in the fourth edition of the ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders’. According to it, the signs and symptoms of alcoholism are clearly laid down and it states that alcohol dependent people:

  1. Will drink more to get their desired effect from alcohol
  2. Experience withdrawal symptoms when the effect of alcohol wears off
  3. Drink larger amounts of alcohol over a longer period of time
  4. Will be unable to consistently control their drinking
  5. Will leave important work for drinking
  6. Will spend a lot of time during the day getting alcohol, drinking it, and recovering from hangovers.
  7. Continue to use alcohol, despite knowing that their chronic physical or psychological problem is caused due to alcohol.
  8. To be declared alcohol-dependent, your loved one must experience at least three of these criteria during a year.

However, there is still no one definite test to diagnose alcohol-use disorders. Therefore, professionals diagnose them by making use of the patient’s comprehensive medical, family, and mental-health information.

Hi im 21 years old boy im medical student 1s year im in relationship since 14 months my girlfriend age is just 18 and...
Dear Thanks for this query. I can understand your concern regarding your relationship with your girlfriend. First of all she is just 18 years old girl, she is not mature enough. Expectations are the reason of your problem. Communicate with her, that these things are bothering to you. Keep in mind, give her space, she is having all the rights, likes dislikes, to whom she wants to talk she can. You can't force her to live according to you. So better to give her some space, give some more time to your relationship. If you will react more, she will feel suffocating and will get irritated. Only thing you can do, keep yourself busy in your studies, give her some space, don't spy on her, give more time to your relationship, you both are young spend some more time, if still it doesn't work then go for breakup. Hope my answer helped you. Regards.

You are deprived and need physical expression. I also presume you are watching plenty of porn? This aggravates the issue. Focus on the reason why you are staying separately and what you will achieve by it. Also Try vigorous sport and games which can release pent up emotions. Masturbation can become an addition and also disrupt your future sexual drive.

Suffering unwanted anxiety is very much prevalent nowadays! It is common complaint that" I Suffer from anxiety. Please help me" Anxiety is a very normal emotion, which gives rise to feelings of nervousness every now and then. An anxiety disorder is a serious medical condition in which people experience a high degree of distress and mental trauma, which hinders a normal life. People suffering from this medical condition experience high levels of anxiety and nervousness almost all the time. Here are the cardinal symptoms that indicate you're suffering from anxiety disorder. 1. Troublesome & Excess worry - This condition prevails if you worry about the day to day activities too much on a regular basis. It is identified when you start taking too much stress about very common and routine things, related to life or work which tends to affect you in an adverse way. A noticeable sign of excessive worry can be too much fatigue. 2. Lack of Sleep/irregular, disturbed sleep - Problems in falling asleep at the right time and problems in maintaining an uninterrupted sleep are two signs that indicate you have an anxiety disorder. 3. Baseless / Irrational fears - This symptom is not generalized; instead, it is specific and subjective in relation to a particular thing or situation. The fears that are experienced under this category are sudden and unexpected in nature and there is no fixed rationale behind these fears. One may ear of death or accident or fall from a plane and so on. 4. Muscle pain - Muscle discomfort and pain is one of the leading physiological causes of an anxiety disorder. The pain felt is chronic and pervasive, and is very common among people facing situations of anxiety. If you are exposed to constant periods of anxiety, you will experience fatigue, muscle pains and lethargy or unwillingness to work. 5. Unexplained indigestion - Problems related to the digestive system are also a sign of anxiety disorder. In this case, you may face constant digestive problems accompanied by a common disorder called IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBS refers to an anxiety situation in the digestive tract, which is characterized by sudden urge to defecate on eating, stomach aches, cramping, bloating, gas, constipation, and/or diarrhoea. Apart from the above-mentioned symptoms, other symptoms of an anxiety disorder include stage fright, self- consciousness, panic attacks, memory flashbacks, perfectionism, compulsive behaviours, self- doubt, and such others. Symptoms vary depending on the type of anxiety disorder, but general symptoms include: • Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness. • Problems sleeping. • Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet. • Shortness of breath. • Heart palpitations. • An inability to be still and calm. • Dry mouth. • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet. Anxiety is a normal, predictable part of life. However, people with an anxiety disorder are essentially phobic about anxiety feeling. And they’ll go to any lengths to avoid it. Some people experience generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), excessive anxiety about real-life concerns, such as money, relationships, health and academics, Others struggle with social anxiety, and worry about being evaluated or embarrassing themselves. People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) might become preoccupied with symmetry or potential contamination. The bottom line is that people can experience anxiety, and anxiety disorders, related to just about anything. Most of these steps contribute to a healthy and fulfilling life, overall. To sum up, making some basic lifestyle changes can do wonders for someone coping with elevated anxiety. Take these steps from today. 1. Take a deep breath. Deep diaphragmatic breathing triggers our relaxation response, switching from our fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system, to the relaxed, balanced response of our parasympathetic nervous system, according to, clinical psychologists, who have suggested the following exercise, which you can repeat several times: #Inhale slowly to a count of four, starting at your belly and then moving into your chest. Gently hold your breath for four counts. Then slowly exhale to four counts. 2 Be active. One of the most important things one can do to cope with anxiety] is to get regular cardiovascular exercise,” For instance, a brisk 30- to 60-minute walk “releases endorphins that lead to a reduction in anxiety.” You can start today by taking a walk. Or create a list of physical activities that you enjoy, and put them on your schedule for the week. Other options include: running, rowing, rollerblading, hiking, biking, dancing, swimming, surfing, step aerobics, kickboxing and sports such as soccer, tennis and basketball, in short just anything you can do to be physically active 3. Sleep well. Not getting enough sleep can trigger anxiety. If you’re having trouble sleeping, tonight, engage in a relaxing activity before bedtime, such as taking a warm bath, listening to soothing music or taking several deep breaths and meditation is excellent .If you’re like many people with anxiety whose brains start buzzing right before bed, jot down your worries earlier in the day for 10 to 15 minutes, or try a mental exercise like thinking of fruits with the same letter. 4. Fight an anxious thought. We all have moments wherein we unintentionally increase or maintain our own worry by thinking unhelpful thoughts. These thoughts are often unrealistic, inaccurate, or, to some extent, unreasonable. Thankfully, we can change these thoughts. The first step is to identify them. Consider how a specific thought affects your feelings and behaviours. Is it helpful or unhelpful? These are the types of thoughts you want to challenge. Therefore it is suggested asking yourself: “Is this worry real?” “Is this going to happen?” “If the worst possible outcome happens, what would be so bad about that?” “Could I handle that?” “What might I do?” “If something bad happens, what might that mean to me?” “Is this really true or does it just seem so. Then, reframe or correct that thought to make it more accurate, realistic and more adaptive. For example: “I would feel embarrassed if I tripped on the stage, but that’s just a feeling; and it won't last forever, and I would get through it.” 5. Say an encouraging statement. Positive, accurate statements can help to put things into perspective. See these examples: “Anxiety is just a feeling, like any other feeling.” and “This feels bad, but I can use some strategies to cope with it.” 6. Stay connected to others. Social support is vital to managing stress, Today, call a loved one, schedule to go to lunch with a close friend. Talking with others can do a world of good. Another option is to get together and engage in an activity that improves your anxiety, such as taking a walk, sitting on the beach or going to a yoga class. 7. Avoid Alcohol and caffeine. Managing anxiety is as much about what you do as what you don’t do. And there are some substances that exacerbate anxiety. Caffeine/alcohol is one of those substances. The last thing people with anxiety need is a substance that makes them feel more turned on, which is exactly what caffeine/alcohol does. 8. Avoid mood changing drugs. “While drugs and alcohol might help to reduce anxiety in the short term, they often do just the opposite in the long term,” Even the short-term effect can be harmful. Experts have treated countless clients whose first panic attack occurred while they were taking drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy or LSD. “Panic attacks are bad enough if you are straight and sober, so imagine how bad they are if you are high, and can’t get untied until the drug wears off.” 9. Do something you enjoy. Engaging in enjoyable activities helps to soothe your anxiety. For instance, today, you might take a walk, listen to music or read a book, 10. Take a break. It’s also helpful to build breaks into your day. As it is said, this might be a “simple change of pace or scenery, enjoying a hobby, or switching ‘to-do’ tasks.” “Breaking from concerted effort can be refreshing.” 11. Solve Problem It is suggested considering how you can address the stressors that are causing your anxiety. Today, make a list of these stressors and next to each one, jot down one or two solutions. 12. Read a book. There are many valuable resources on anxiety, which teach you effective coping skills. Some recommended are Dying of Embarrassment for people with social anxiety; The BDD Workbook for body dysmorphic disorder; The Imp of the Mindand The OCD Workbook for obsessive-compulsive disorder. And It is suggested "Stop Obsessing" for adults with OCD (and Up and Down the Worry Hill for kids with OCD). For people with panic attacks, it is suggested Don’t Panic: Taking Control of Anxiety Attacks. For a general overview of cognitive-behavioural therapy for anxiety,

Depression - Know the Tell Tale Signs!

Feeling sad is one thing, but a persistent feeling of sadness can overtake your life, and is anything but healthy. Depression is not something to be ashamed of. It is a common condition, that can be treated if identified early.

Treatment of depression usually involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The effects of depression vary from person to person, but some symptoms are commonly experienced in all cases. These symptoms can be categorised as physical changes, behavioural changes, cognitive changes and emotional changes.

  1. Physical symptoms of depression: Feeling tired all the time is one of the most common symptoms of depression. The person may also have persistent headaches and sporadic muscle pains. Insomnia or sleep troubles are often associated with depression. This can further lead to significant fatigue, and a vicious cycle ensues. Sleep troubles can also lead to the formation of dark circles under the eyes, and make the patient’s skin look dull. Patients suffering from depression often find themselves losing weight due to a significant loss of appetite, or find themselves snacking excessively, and hence, putting on weight.
  2. Behavioural symptoms of depression: Depression can make a person withdraw from his or her friends and family and become a recluse. A loss of interest in activities that would usually excite the person is another characteristic symptom of depression. This condition can make a person unable to concentrate or focus on work and other activities, and hence, may affect productivity in school or the workplace. Depression can also make a person rely heavily on alcohol, sedatives etc.
  3. Cognitive symptoms of depression: Depression can make a person feel worthless, and leave them with a bleak outlook on life. A depressed person will often find himself or herself criticising themselves harshly for things that may or may not be their fault. This can make them increasingly more agitated or irritable. Depressed people may also turn to violence and trigger reckless behaviour such as gambling, substance abuse, reckless driving or taking up a rash sport.
  4. Emotional symptoms of depression: Feeling sad for no reason characterises depression. This sadness can overwhelm a person and make them feel guilty about indulging in anything that could make them happier. It can also make the person lose confidence in himself/herself, thus making him/her indecisive about simple decisions. Other emotions that are commonly experienced by depressed people include irritability, frustration, guilt, and disappointment.

A frequent but ignored symptom is thoughts of self-harm or suicide, leading to deliberate self-harm/suicide attempts. If you or someone you know suffers from any of the above symptoms, you may need help! Visit your Psychiatrist at the earliest to have yourself evaluated, and started on an appropriate course of management.

Alcohol - How it Affects Your Body?

If you are a heavy drinker or consume alcohol regularly or frequently, you should know about the harmful effects of alcohol or how it affects your body negatively. Alcohol consumption may cause several physical and emotional changes, which can cause great harm to the body. There are many long-term effects of alcohol abuse, which put your health at great risk.

Here are some ways in which alcohol affects the different parts of your body:

As a result, pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas is likely. This is a serious problem, capable of destroying the pancreas. Alcohol affects the liver severely. Excessive intake of alcohol may cause alcoholic hepatitis and lead to jaundice development. Chronic liver inflammation may cause severe scarring or cirrhosis. The formation of scar tissue may destroy your liver. When the liver and pancreas do not work properly, there is a risk of hypoglycemia. The damaged pancreas may cause unbalanced blood sugar levels, which is a serious concern.
  2. Central nervous system: Change in behaviour is one of the primary signs of alcohol being in your system. Alcohol travels through the body and quickly reaches your brain and other parts of the central nervous system or CNS. This may lead to slurred speech and it becomes harder for you to talk. Your overall body coordination is affected along with your balance and the ability to walk properly. Over drinking negatively affects your ability to think clearly, impulse control and your ability to form memories. Long term drinking shrinks the frontal lobes of the brain. Damage to the nervous system because of alcohol may cause pain, abnormal sensations in your limbs, and numbness.
  3. Digestive system: Alcohol also affects your digestive system in several ways. Alcohol can affect the entire digestive system starting from the mouth to the colon and a single incident of excessive drinking can wreck parts of the digestive tract.
  4. Organ damage: Alcohol abuse damages your salivary glands, which cause irritation in the tongue and month. This may result in gum disease, tooth disease or tooth decay. Ulcers in the oesophagus or food pipe, acid reflux and heartburn are other impacts. Excessive drinking may also lead to stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining.

Inflammation of the pancreas disrupts its ability to help the process of digestion and regulate effective metabolism. Damage to the digestive system from alcohol abuse can also cause diarrhoea, gas, abdominal fullness.
