Joint Pain

Joint Pain

Word arthritis comes from the Greek arthronmeaning “joint” and the Latin itis meaning “inflammation.” Arthritis affects the musculoskeletal system, specifically the joints. It is the main cause of disability among people above 55 years of age in industrialized countries.

Arthritis is not a single disease – it is an umbrella term that covers more than 100 medical conditions. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and generally affects elderly patients. Some forms of arthritis can affect people at a much younger age.

OSTEOARTHRITIS – usually occurs with age, as cartilage loses elasticity. Risk factors include: old age; joint injury; poorly formed joints; excessive weight; genetic defects; stress on the joints from certain jobs or sports. The symptoms of osteoarthritis develop slowly and get worse as time goes by. The most common affected joints are in the hips, hands, knees and spine. The joint become stiff sometimes swollen and loses its flexibility, especially first thing in the morning.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS – is an inflammatory form of arthritis. The synovial membrane (synovium) is attacked, resulting in swelling and pain. If left untreated the arthritis can lead to deformity.
Among the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are swollen, inflamed, stiff and painful joints. The fingers, arms, legs and wrists are most commonly affected. Symptoms are usually worse on waking in the morning but get better half an hour later. Weight loss is common.

INFECTIOUS ARTHRITIS (septic arthritic) – is an infection in the synovial fluid and tissues of a joint. It is usually caused by bacteria, but could also be caused by fungi or viruses.
Symptoms of infectious arthritis include fever, joint inflammation and swelling. Tenderness with joint pain is always noticeable. Usually symptoms are linked to injuries or other illnesses.

JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRTIS (JRA) – means arthritis that affects a person aged 16 or under.

JRA can manifest in any of three ways:

1. Pauciarticular JRA, the most common and mildest. The child experiences pain in up to four joints.
2. Polyarticular JRA affects more joints and is more severe. As time goes by, it tends to get worse.
3. Systemic JRA is the least common. Pain is experienced in many joints. It can spread to organs. This can be the most serious JRA.
Sufferers of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis are often children with poor appetite, weight loss, anemia, and intermittent fever.

TREATMENTS

As one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine, homeopathy is a safe and permanent way of eliminating arthritis. A remedy is chosen based on the theory of individualization and symptom similarity. In this way, a state of complete health can be regained, removing all the signs and symptoms from which a patient is suffering.

Below is a list of acute arthritis remedies, along with a description of the disease they treat. Keep in mind that these remedies may only act as immediate palliatives and will not permanently cure arthritis unless they are a constitutional match for the patient.

  • Bryonia alba – Excellent arthritis remedy for pain with inflammation that is aggravated by movement and relieved by moderate pressure and rest.

  • Ledum – Remarkable arthritis remedy for gout and ascending rheumatism. Works best by cold application.

  • Rhus Tox – For pain aggravated by first movement and damp weather and made better by continuous motion.

  • Colchicum – For pain made worse by motion, touch or mental effort, better by warmth and rest. Mostly for gouty pain.

  • Kalmia – Well known arthritis remedy for descending pain, or pain with heart palpitation and slow pulse.

  • Guaiacum – For gouty abscesses of joints, and pain relieved by cold bath and cold application.

  • Calcarea Carb – For arthritic swelling and knee pain made worse by cold, especially in fleshy people.

  • Benzoic acid – For gouty concretions of joints, and knee pain caused by abnormal deposition of uric acid.

  • Hypericum – Remarkable arthritis remedy for rheumatoid arthritis; has outstanding action over nerve pain.

What Can be the Reasons Behind Dislocation?

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics, Fellowship In Arthroscopy & Arthroplasty, Advanced Life trauma Support, Diploma In Sports Injuries
Orthopedist, Delhi
What Can be the Reasons Behind Dislocation?

Dislocation refers to an injury, which causes the bones to abnormally separate from each other in the joint, which is the meeting place of the bones. Dislocation causes intense pain and is most common in the fingers, shoulders and the elbows. Although a timely diagnosis can make your pain go away, any future injury in the tendons or the ligaments might bring back the injury.

What can cause a dislocation?
The causes of dislocation are as follows:

  1. A body joint can get dislocated if you have suffered a fall.
  2. If you are into any form of sports that requires strenuous physical activity and intense exertion on certain body parts like gymnastics, football or volleyball you have a chance of suffering from dislocated body joints.
  3. Automobile accidents can also cause dislocation of joints.
  4. Some People who are with a loose ligament and are more likely to get a dislocated joint than other people. This may happen without the influence of a major physical trauma or stress.

Understanding the signs and symptoms
In the majority of the cases, a dislocation of the joint is easily detectable as it induces inflammation along with redness and deformation of the affected area. Some of the other symptoms that might occur as a result of the dislocation of the body joints could be:

  1. You might experience severe pain while moving the dislocated joint.
  2. There will be a lack of sensation near the dislocated portion.
  3. There might be a stinging sensation in the dislocated area.
  4. In certain areas you may not be able to move the joint at all

If you have a dislocated joint, the doctors can easily relocate them. Depending on the amount of swelling and pain you are experiencing, the doctor might administer local anesthesia during the process. If the joint dislocation is too severe or has multiple instances of dislocation, then you may have to undergo surgery. Surgery may also be suggested if the adjoined ligaments or tendons are severely affected along with the joints.

6 Causes Of Shoulder Pain And Its Treatment!

6 Causes Of Shoulder Pain And Its Treatment!

Your shoulder is one of the most overused joints in the body and thus is at a higher risk of contracting an injury. Shoulder pain may lead to mobility issues where moving your arms may become extremely difficult. The shoulder consists of three parts, viz. the shoulder blade, collarbone and the upper arm bone. Shoulder pain may result from an injury to any of these areas.

The various causes of shoulder pain are:

  1. Impingement: Impingement of the shoulder muscle occurs when the top of the shoulder impinges on the rotator cuff muscles. This condition can lead to severe pain in the shoulder.
  2. Bursitis: Bursa is a fluid filled sac that cushions the bones and help in preventing friction. Bursitis is a disorder that results in inflammation of the bursa, thus resulting in shoulder pain.
  3. Tendinitis: Tendinitis is a condition that is characterized by gradual wear and tear of the tendon. Usually the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder are affected by this condition.
  4. Instability of the shoulder: Shoulder instability is a disorder of the shoulder wherein the upper arm bone dislocates from its socket. This can cause excessive pain in the shoulder.
  5. Fractures: A fracture in the bones of the shoulder results in excruciating shoulder pain.
  6. Arthritis: Arthritis is a disorder that leads to inflammation in the joints, thus resulting in pain and impaired movement of the joint.

Treatment
The treatment for shoulder pain consists of medications and physiotherapy. You may also be asked to discontinue any strenuous activity that requires shoulder movement. Medications such as NSAIDs are prescribed to help in controlling the pain. Various stretches of the shoulder are also recommended to improve shoulder flexibility and mobility.

Tips
Do exercises such as the overhead press with light weights to improve your shoulder strength. Also make sure to include certain external rotation exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Recovering From A Fracture - 5 Quick Tips That Can Help!

Recovering From A Fracture - 5 Quick Tips That Can Help!

Even though we have 206 bones in our bodies, breaking just one is enough to bring our daily lives to a standstill. A partial or complete break in a bone is termed as a fracture. While minor fractures can heal in as little as 6 weeks major fractures can take 3-4 months to heal properly. In cases of complex fractures, you may need physical therapy even after this time period to get back complete mobility. Hence patience is essential when a fracture is healing, but here are a few tips on how to speed up the process.

  1. Increase your protein intake: Proteins are essential for the healing and repairing of damage to bones and tissues. Proteins also give the bone structure its strength, Hence, depriving the body of adequate protein will result in the formation of soft bones rather than hard, strong bones. This prevents a bone from fracturing in the same place again.
  2. Have a diet rich in antioxidants: Inflammation is one of the first symptoms of a fracture. This inflammation can continue for many days after the incident and until the inflammation reduces, healing cannot take place properly. Antioxidants help rid toxins from the body and help reduce inflammation thereby initiating the healing process. Antioxidants can also help relieve pain.
  3. Exercise: While you must take care not to apply too much pressure on the affected area it is essential to move the limb as much as possible. Being active promotes blood flow and in this way speeds up the healing process.
  4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine: In most cases, a doctor will prescribe pain relievers to deal with the pain of a fracture. Under no circumstances should you consume alcohol when taking these medications. Even after the antibiotic course is over it is a good idea to abstain from alcohol as this can increase inflammation. Similarly, caffeine and all caffeinated products should also be avoided as they contain compounds that can prevent calcium from being absorbed.
  5. Have an alkaline diet: Having an alkaline diet with lots of fruits and vegetables helps stabilise the pH levels of the body and conserves minerals and proteins needed to build strong bones. In this way, it creates the optimal environment for healing. An alkaline diet also increases the production of growth hormones and other growth factors like IGF insulin in the body. These are crucial to speeding up the healing process and aid in new bone formation.

Eliminate Back Pain Forever - Know How Chiropractic Treatment Is Beneficial!

If you are suffering from a constant back or neck pain that never seems to go away and disrupts your routine considerably, then you can consider chiropractic treatment option. Chiropractic care is a natural treatment of musculoskeletal disorders without any drugs or surgery. Chiropractors specialize in reshaping the spine, which changed from its original shape due to many reasons causing pain and inflammation. It is widely accepted a form of treatment in all developed countries like the USA, UK, etc. and gaining popularity in India especially in cases of back pain.

How do they treat?
After carefully listening to the patient, Chiropractors initiates the treatment on the specially designed table. Their palm and finger play a vital role in chiropractic treatment. They apply a light thrust on the affected area on the spine and gradually glide down until the end of the spine in the sacral region. This process actually helps to realign the spine by straightening it.

Chiropractors may massage on the soft tissue as well to ease out the pain. A chiropractor glides the pressure through the muscles of their patients, which gives a tremendous value-added benefit with a little time or effort on the chiropractor's part. The massaging action relaxes strained muscle surrounding the spine, which enhances patient satisfaction.

What is the duration?
Treatments generally take weeks for a permanent solution to the back pain. Initially the skilled professional may suggest you to for 2-3 visits within a week. Depending on the response, it may come down to once a week. Each session varies between 20 - 30 minutes under the expert's fingers. They keep on tracking the improvement level by comparing to the first visit. They are effective in Subacute back pain, Chronic Back Pain, and Neck Pain.

Are there any Contradictions?
Yes, people suffering from fractures, bone tumors, arthritis, infective bones & joints, osteoporosis, etc. should not be treated by Chiropractors. Screening process by the chiropractor at the first visit is to see whether you may be at high risk for these problems. Screening allows the chiropractors to identify stress points, misalignments and other issues related to back pain. It helps in reaching to the origin of pain and determine what treatment is necessary.

Any activities providing synergy to the treatment?
Spinal adjustments are most effective if combined with conventional therapies to treat back pain, which include:

  • Heat and cold therapies
  • Relaxing methods
  • Electrical stimulus
  • Promo block
  • Stretching Exercises
  • Educating the Patient

Chances of further aggravation in chiropractic treatment are low if performed by a trained practitioner. Further, if you have been under a chiropractor for long and your back pain isn’t improving its time to visit your family physician to find out if any other treatment option should be pursued, but in most cases, this procedure can provide relief on a long-term basis. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Knee Replacement After 50 - What You Need To Know About It?

Complaint of pain in the knee joints is a fairly common occurrence among the people of advanced ages. Arthritis and other bone related diseases are common causes of knee pain. The onset of such troubles might set in as early as the late thirties and permeate well into one's nineties. In fact a substantial number of people face issues pertaining to osteoporosis right after fifty. This impedes the ability to perform essential tasks including walking, sitting cross-legged and other rigorous activities. Non-surgical treatments like medication and physical exercises are often the first option that most physicians avail of. However, for a more effective and lasting solution, knee replacement surgeries are gaining steam all across the globe. Joint replacement surgeries have largely been successful at soothing knee pain, curing leg injuries and restoring the potential to fulfill normal activities.

The benefits of knee replacement surgery are multiple. More number of people can reap the advantages of it.

  • Moreover, the endurance of the surgical joints is fairly long. A large number of people accredit a new leash of life to these replacement surgeries.
  • Not only these contribute to lessening the joint pains extensively but also enable one to resume all the normal activities without the slightest glitch. All such factors have contributed to the phenomenal success rate of the knee replacement surgeries.

Precautions
However, there are certain precautions that one needs to be mindful of when volunteering for a knee replacement surgery. Although a rarity, certain complications might arise in the course of the implant. Blood clots and infections might occur as well as cardiovascular injuries. In such cases, the potential of recovering gets limited. But overall, it a very safe process with testified success rates. Another precaution one must necessarily observe is that of moderating the activities. Excess of strenuous activities or a prolonged period following the implantation results in the wearing of plastic patella. As a consequence of which, there could be a possible resurgence of pain. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Understanding The Risk Factors Of Osteopenia & Osteoporosis!

MS - Orthopaedics, DNB (Orthopedics)
Orthopedist, Guwahati
Understanding The Risk Factors Of Osteopenia & Osteoporosis!

Osteopenia is a medical condition that gradually causes thinning of bone mass. While the thinning mass is not considered as severe, the real danger looms when osteopenia aggravates to osteoporosis, resulting in a bone fracture. Osteopenia is mostly witnessed in people above the age of 50. The difference between the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis lies in the measure of bone density.

Osteoporosis, on the other hand, is the loss of bone mass due to the deficiency of calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and other minerals and vitamins. Osteoporosis can lead to broken bones, height loss, acute pain and humpback. It is estimated that over 54 million people in the US suffer from osteoporosis.

Bone mineral density (BMD):
The calcium deposit in the bone is measured by the bone mineral density (BMD) test. This test rightly estimates the chances of bone fracture in a person. Furthermore, it helps a doctor to distinguish between osteopenia and osteoporosis. Being non-invasive in nature, this test can be performed anytime on areas such as hip, shin bone, spine etc. BMD can either be measured by plain radiographs or DEXA. The latter is a form of X-ray that has lesser exposure to radiation. Post the test, a score is given based on the calcium availability of the bones.

How is a BMD comprehended?
Every BMD result is evaluated in the form of T-score. The T-score is derived by comparing the result of the BMD with a normal person in the 30’s having the same race and sex. The difference of score between a healthy individual and a patient affected with osteoporosis or osteopenia is referred to as Standard Deviation. A patient with a T-score in the range of (-1SD) to (-2.5SD) is considered a prime candidate for osteopenia. A patient having a T-score lesser than -2.5SD is diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Risk factor for osteopenia or osteoporosis:
While not everyone runs the risk of getting either osteopenia or osteoporosis, there are certain risk factors attached to it:

  1. Gender: Women run a higher risk of getting affected with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
  2. Race: Women who belong from the Caucasian or Asian origin run a higher risk of getting these diseases.
  3. Age: Most people tend to get these diseases above the age of 50. Humans have a tendency of losing close to 0.5 percent of bone every year after a certain age.
  4. Family history: A person with a family history of osteopenia or osteoporosis has more than 50% chance of getting either osteopenia or osteoporosis.
  5. Lifestyle: Poor diet, excessive smoking, alcohol, lack of exercising etc. goes a long way in contributing towards these diseases.
