5 Proven Hacks to Keep Your Kids Away From Junk Food!

5 Proven Hacks to Keep Your Kids Away From Junk Food!
5 Proven ways to keep your child away from junk food

In India, 2% of urban children are obese, 8-10% are overweight and the number of children likely to be obese is on the rise. Junk food seems to be the major cause behind this recent trend.

Low in nutrient but high on calories, junk food has been found to adversely affect not only energy levels but also brain function. With junk food being easily available, it could be tough to keep your child away from it while nudging him on to eat healthily. However, there are ways in which you can keep your child away from junk food, and consequently lifestyle diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular problems etc. Read on...

1. Always keep healthy snacks easily accessible
Children have a tendency to have foods that are visible and easy to reach. So, if you have packaged foods that your child can get his hands on very easily, it’s time to remove them. From vegetables, fruits to wholegrain crackers, such healthy snack options should be within the reach of your child. Place them in easy to reach food cabinets or on the lower shelves of the fridge, so that whenever your child feels hungry, he can go straight for them rather than opting for unhealthy food options.

2. Say no to junk food when at home
You have the power to create a home environment where you can control what can be eaten and what goes into your pantry. The home should be a place where healthy food should be in and junk food should be out. This way, you get to control the amount of junk food your child has as well as present healthier alternatives to him.

3. Don’t reward your child with junk food
It is very common for parents to reward their children with junk food. This shouldn’t be done as it only makes junk food an even more appealing option for children. Instead opt for non-food rewards such as extra pocket money, or a new toy etc.
Moreover, you shouldn’t use junk food as a bargaining chip either, i.e. by telling him he can have an ice cream if he eats his vegetables first. This would do more harm than good as your child would find processed foods more appealing and healthy food alternatives less appealing.

4. Lead by example
In order for your child to eat healthily, you need to lead by example. Limit your own consumption of junk food first. If you want to take your child away from junk food, you need to be a role-model yourself. Furthermore, it is good to include your child on your plans for healthy eating as it allows them to have a say in what they would and wouldn’t like to eat instead of foodstuffs being imposed on them. Make a meal plan together to figure out healthier eating alternatives for your child.

5. Teach moderation to your child
Don’t completely ban junk food as this move can backfire. This is because, by doing so, the moment your child gets the opportunity to have junk food items, he will most likely overindulge. On the other hand, teach him about moderation and the importance of having small quantities of this type of food from time to time.
Teaching your child to eat healthily is not an easy task, but is also not impossible to achieve. With a little bit of guidance and perseverance, you can easily achieve the goal of keeping your child away from junk foods.

Is homosexual behaviour due to our habits and thinking or are we born homosexual. I don't have any brother n dad didn't gave enough time during my childhood due to which I feel shy infront of him. I get attracted towards guys like me of shy and cute nature. Can a straight guy get attracted towards other guys. Can a straight guy get aroused by seeing others penis. I really is in dilemma and has confusion. I even get friendly with girls but never think of any sexual desire with them. I am from a family where I am surrounded by my sisters and no brother or any male sibling of my age.help me on this?

This is not by birth. It is up to you which way you want to go. Sexual orientation is far away from relationship. Relationship with a lady will make you a complete man having his family and responsibility. Sexual contact with another man will not give you anything except fulfilling your unnatural wish. Hope you understand.

4 Lessons To Take From ‘The King's Speech’ For Your Child’s Speech Disability

4 Lessons To Take From ‘The King's Speech’ For Your Child’s Speech Disability
4 Lessons To Take From ‘The King's Speech’ For Your Child’s Speech Disability

Back in 2010, Colin Firth delivered an emotionally moving performance as Bertie, the man who becomes King George VI, in the movie ‘The King’s Speech’. Bertie developed a speech disability at the tender age of 8 when he was forced by his teacher to write with his right hand instead of his left one. Traumatic experiences like this can hamper your child’s speech as well.

Read on to find out how lessons learnt from ‘The King’s Speech’ can help your child face daily life with confidence.

1. King George admitted his problem:

The first thing Bertie teaches your child is to admit he has a problem. Playing blame games or hiding from it doesn’t sort out the problem at hand. Teach your child to embrace his flaws and accept himself for the way he is, and not withdraw himself into a cocoon. This is the first step in eliminating the hindrance that is speech disability.

2. He had a purpose in life:

Bertie is a resounding reminder of the fact that no matter how we are, our lives have a purpose to fulfil. But if a problem stands in the way of that purpose, then we should know that the problem has to go. Instil a sense of purpose in your child. If he wants to be singer or even a leader like Bertie, then let him know he can.

3. He found his inner power:

Once you find your purpose and know that your problem stands in the way of it; you have to dig deep to find your inner power. Help your child to see past the disappointment, the shame, the embarrassment and humiliation to discover his inner power. Bertie couldn’t have done this without his wife and Logue (his speech therapist). So as parents you have to be pillars of support for your child too.

4. He persevered to achieve his goals:

Bertie may have identified his problem, found his purpose and power, and planned a path to success. But none of this would be of any use to him if he didn’t have the strength to persevere. Despite his initial stuttering at the national radio speech, Bertie didn’t give up. Bertie never gave up. He was a fighter, not a quitter. It is important to inculcate this sense in your child just as Bertie puts it, “Because I have a right to be heard! I have a voice!” Your child has the same right.

The movie ‘The King’s Speech’ reminds us that though Bertie was a king, in the end he was flesh and bones like the rest of us. He faces the problems we do; and we can learn a lot from him.

Hi doctors, I have visited a dance bar 2 months before, I fingered a women's vagina at that time. After that I doubt about hiv. Do I need to go for Elisa check up. Please inform me about this.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
If your finger had a cut prior to the act or if you licked your fingers after the act, then you must get yourself checked. If not so, get relaxed. But in future avoid these kind of risks.

My right testis is big in size like 13 times bigger than in comparison to left one. What should I do? Please suggest!

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
If there is only increase in size, no pain, then most probably it is'hydrocele. It occurs due to collection of fluid in between coverings of testis. It can be treated very easily by a minor operation under local anaesthesia. It is better to be operated on healthy side also to avoid recurrence on healthy side. I advise you to go to a surgeon nearby for physical examination and confirmation of diagnosis and treatment accordingly. Take care.

My father had recently get bypass operation and didn't quit smoking. What should I do?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Motivate him for gradually stopping it by reducing the frequency of cigarettes per day. He may take nicotine buffered chewing gums for few days as a substitute of smoking. Gradually he has to reduce these chewing gums & ultimately stop it. If needed take help of a psychiatrist for de-addiction.

Sir my father was suffering from paralyses since 4 year ago. He is paralyses in right side I will take him nagpur many times and other place &consult doctor as well as baba pandit but I not satisfy. He is now still paralyses and not able to talk and move his right hand and not able to proper walk with right lag. His hand and lag have also sense but finger of his hand and lag not respond. want that Only he will be able To talk. For this I spend our all money if he could able to talk. Please help me sir please I still wait for your response.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Paralysis occurs due to stroke in brain. Stroke means sudden loss of blood supply to a part of brain, which can occur due to clotting of blood inside blood vessel or due to leakage of blood from blood vessel. As a result that part of brain dies. With passage of time gradually neurons (nerve cells) from other areas of brain start taking the responsibility to work for dead part. But it is a very slow process that may take many years or decades. Recovery occurs by its own and there is no operation/magical medicines/therapy to cure him immediately you have to keep patience. Just continue his antihypertensive/antithrombotic medicines and physiotherapy. I wish your father all the best.

Ocd is a very stubborn psychiatric illness. It is very distressing to have recurrent absurd thoughts/doubts/impulses/images against will. Often person suffering from it is bound to do compulsive rituals like in your case you because of obsession of contamination, are cleaning excessively. Treatment is possible through medicines and psychotherapy. You may consult a psychiatrist. All the best.

Recently my daughter faced fits sickness. I would like to know the general symptoms before she gets this kind of fits?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Before epilepsy there may be an aura. The patients become aware about impending epileptic attack, they experience anxiety, uneasiness, numbness all over the body, flashes of light in front of light etc. Few patients are noticed with automatic movements like chewing/pouting/blinking etc few are noticed staring in blank just prior to epileptic fit. But it is not necessary to have experience of aura in all cased and all the time. You should try to continue her anti epileptic medicines timely to avoid recurrence of attack. I wish her all the best.

My son is 26 years old. His brain was declined and was operated at Hospital before 4 years. After operation he is unable to walk without support. He is doing physiotherapy everyday. Still he has not recovered. What should I do? Is second operation required? As per doctors consulted, not to go for second operation as it is not assured that he will start walking.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
I understand your concern. I can imagine how painful it is to see somebody so close suffering with such condition. Neurological illness like brain pathology even after brain surgery is very slow to recover. Although the current situation appears to be not good. It will improve gradually. Brain has a very slow recovery and regeneration rate. It may take many months to years to get the desired function of limbs. I wish your son a better health.

My father got homeopathic medicine for parkinson last week. After taking medicine his body got burns like sores. what it means?

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Patna
Low potency homeopathic medicines may cause allergic reaction sometimes. Parkinson's disease is a neurological illness, which is gradually worsening condition. Researches have proven that with allopathy we can control its symptoms. Homeopathy does not have such a solid evidence. He may stop homeopathic medicines. He should take antiallergic treatment from local hospital. Later on, my suggestion is to continue allopathic medicines.
