Congo Fever also called as Crimean Hemorrhagic fever is a viral fever resulting from tick bites. The disease is widespread in Asia, East Europe, Africa and Middle East. It was first discovered in Crimea in 1944 and recently an outbreak was found in the Indian State of Gujarat.
Congo fever is a viral fever which is spread by touching the tissues and blood of livestock infected with the congo virus. People who work in agricultural field, veterinary hospitals, and slaughter houses have a high risk of getting the disease. Animals get infected with the disease through tick bites. The fever is highly contagious and can spread easily. When any healthy person comes in contact with blood or body fluids of the infected person, there is high chance of getting infected with the disease.
Congo virus symptoms are similar to that of any viral fever and include headaches, high fever, joint pain, nausea, stomach pain and loose motions.
Anyone who is experiencing such symptoms should contact the doctor immediately. The doctors will prescribe tests like ELISA Test, antigen detection, polymerase chain reaction and would also isolate the virus. If the patient is diagnosed with Congo fever then he/she is treated with anti-viral drug ribavarin and intravenous fluids.
