Ergonomics - How Does It Help In Preventing Body Pain?

Ergonomics to prevent body pain With a constant increase in the use of computers, desk jobs are becoming more and more common in the current job trends. Individuals are confined to their cubicles and it becomes customary to spend 8 to 10 hours daily on an average seated on the chair.

This trend of desk jobs has rendered the routine human lifestyle to become sedentary and thus, a rise in health issues has been observed. Right from metabolic diseases to posture related problems, various diseases and disorders are affecting the world population. Body pain is one of the most common problems that people suffer from.

Although pain can be very discomforting and can be considered as a negative symptom, it is a kind of a signal body gives us at the start of any health issue.

Etiological factors like lack of an active lifestyle, tedious working hours, improper posture, and lack of adequate rest are triggers for body pain. The symptom of body ache is no longer associated only with the older age group, since the working community belongs to a middle aged group. Young people tend to suffer from chronic back pain since their work routine involves long hours of sitting at a single place, without many breaks. Also, people undergoing strenuous work hours become a target for chronic body pain.

To overcome this health problem, certain simple measures can be undertaken for prevention. The term ergonomics suggests the interaction of the environment with the occupation of the person. Management and adaptability to the environment with respect to the health concerns of the working professionals is looked after in ergonomics which ensures an enhancement in the quality of life for the workforce in a working environment.

The goals of ergonomics can be enlisted as follows –

1. Work related illness should be prevented

2. Workplace productivity should be increased

3. Quality of work should be improved

4. Work environment should not be detrimental to the physical as well as mental health of the working professionals.

Work ergonomics that are beneficial for people employed at a desk job are as follows:

1. The desktop should be placed at the distance of an arm’s length. Eye level of the operator should be at the apex level of the desktop’s screen.

2. Arms should be allowed to move freely and be able to rest on the arm rest of the chair.

3. Shrugging of the shoulders should be avoided.

4. Back rest of the chair should be used for support. The back rest of the chair should be present up to the shoulder and should be designed in a way that it is angled at a right angle to the sitting surface.

5. A convexity should be present in the lower back area of the chair for better support while sitting.

6. The chair height should be adjusted in a way that the knees form a right angle. Feet should touch the floor and not dangle in the air.

7. During typing or while using the computer’s mouse, wrist should be kept at a neutral position.

8. Back posture should be checked every hour and corrected if faulty.

9. A small break of 5-10 minutes should be taken at an interval of 2-3 hours to change position. Walking around and stretching the body helps relax the muscles.

10. When a laptop is in use, it should be placed on a stand in a way that the screen is placed in front of the operator’s eyes. To determine whether a person’s posture is correct or not, a physical therapist can be consulted. Maintaining a correct posture is very important to avoid suffering from a back ache.

People who suffer from conditions affecting the spine should seek expert opinion for maintaining their posture and avoiding spine related complications. The postural muscles play an important role in maintaining the body’s posture for long hours. Exercises that are targeting to enhance the strength of these muscles can help to build up adequate muscle strength.

Healthy Mindset - How Can It Help In Leading A Better Relationships?

Healthy Mindset - How Can It Help In Leading A Better Relationships?

Have you been emotionally invested in a relationship for quite some time? Have you faced continual fights and disagreements with your partner? Have these fights resulted into frustration or have they affected the natural course of your respective lives? If yes, it is time for you to reassess the effort or rather the kind of effort you put in to make things work. Quarrels are an integral part of any healthy and serious relationship. However, an overdose may lead to severed ties. It bruises your memory and leaves you too distraught to engage in an emotional attachment. The kind of mindset a person applies to his or her relationship determines the kind of treatment the person receives in the relationship. Hence, you must be very careful.

A healthier mindset can be adopted in the following ways:

  1. To complain as least as possible: Keep low expectations from your partner. The most common reason for conflict in relationships is the list of expectations, which when left unfulfilled leads to complaining and nagging. What you do for your partner is what 'you think is the right thing',  but your partner may not hold the same perspective.
  2. Respecting and accepting your partner as he/she is: A package deal, will resolve many issues without debate. When pointed out in subtle ways, your partner will understand and try to change for you , if she/he wishes to.
  3. Try to have a growth oriented mindset: A growth oriented mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset can always help. When you have a fixed mindset you easily give up on your partner or on the relationship. You tend to feel hopeless about future and associate a lack of growth or change with your partner. A growth- oriented mindset endows you with hope. A situation is perceived as an occurrence in the present that need not necessarily be translated into future. Also, such a mindset expects both parties to accept and encourage change and growth of individuals in the relationship. Anything contrary can make your relationship boring.
  4. Stop using labels: Labeling is an indecent way of identifying the problem with your partner or with the relationship in general. You should neither brand yourself as something or your partner as something else. Associating critical adjectives with one another is a way of demeaning your lover and can dissuade your partner from communicating his or her viewpoint.
  5. Look for the trigger: Most quarrels result from a trigger. Trying to pinpoint the trigger with a cool head can actually be of use. This will make partners aware of their faults and instead of dodging the situation they will be able to deal with it better.
  6. Try to rekindle the spark: Time, overburdening responsibilities or workload can make your relationship a routine affair. An element of secrecy and excitement is important. Therefore, desire should never take a backseat in your relationship. Try to fulfill your partner's desire and let him or her know about your expectations as well.

How To Fight Depression Without Drugs?

How To Fight Depression Without Drugs?

The condition known as depression can range from a self-limiting case of the blues to a life-threatening illness. Medications are often prescribed for depression, and if you are experiencing significant, debilitating depressive symptoms, drug therapy may be your best option for improving quality of life. If you prefer to fight depression without drugs, however, there are many simple, effective strategies to try, especially if you’re dealing with a passing case of the blues or a situational depression triggered by life circumstances. These steps can also be helpful when used along with medication for serious depression.

Tackle manageable problems. Not all problems have straightforward solutions; depression can be exacerbated by issues that are out of your control, like health problems, financial problems, and the death of a loved one. In order to overcome life’s toughest problems, it helps to get practice by tackling something you can change. What are the smaller obstacles in your life that cause you to feel negative day by day? Practice overcoming those, and you’ll gain strength to face the bigger issues.

  • Set solution-oriented goals. Think of concrete ways you can improve your situation. Has your house gotten overly cluttered? That’s something you can tackle. Make a detailed plan to clean the house, room by room, and allow yourself to feel satisfaction with each mission you accomplish.
  • Keep track of your progress in a journal. Sometimes the simple act of writing a goal down provides motivation to move forward and make a change.

Express yourself. Depression tends to cause people to retreat from life and avoid communicating a lot with other people, but it only gets worse when you keep emotions bottled up inside. Your feelings have value because they are a part of you, so find a way to express them.

  • Don’t spend too much time alone. Have daily conversations with friends, family and classmates and avoid negative people. It’s not necessary to talk about your depression; just be yourself and say what comes naturally. The most important thing is to remember you are not alone and there will be always someone ready to help.
  • Writing, dance, visual arts, music and other types of art can be extremely therapeutic forms of self expression.
  • Don’t be afraid to express sadness, fear, anger, anxiety and the other emotions that accompany depression. These feelings are as much a part of life as happiness and satisfaction. Compounding your emotions with shame will only make you feel worse.

Nourish your spiritual side. Many people find that turning to spirituality helps them find peace when they’re dealing with depression.

  • Try meditation, which is focused on developing thought patterns that lead to self-awareness and peace. Research meditation groups in your area or practice on your own.
  • If you are a religious person, consider attending your place of worship more frequently, and getting involved in groups that meet outside of services. Spending time with like-minded people will give you the comfort of being part of a community.

Be kind to yourself. Depression can lead to extremely negative feelings about one’s abilities and personality. Focus on what you like about yourself and the positive things you have to offer the world, rather than dwelling on things that are going wrong.

  • Don’t blame yourself for being depressed. Depression affects almost everyone at one point or another. You aren’t weak or cowardly; you have a condition that can be debilitating, and you’re taking steps to face it head-on. That’s brave.

Hello doctor! I am 20 years old and am suffering from anxiety and depression. I have tried various types of remedies- from talking to loved ones to consulting a therapist, but I still seem to be stuck without any effective solution. Been facing this problem for almost a year.

Hello doctor! I am 20 years old and am suffering from anxiety and depression. I have tried various types of remedies-...
At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a competent counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. It is likely that your therapist was not suitable because it may not have been that person's speciality. So please find a depression therapist and work out the details with him/her. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, spend time in nature or gardening, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Find an oral substitute - Keep other things around to pop in your mouth when cravings hit. Try mints, carrot or celery sticks, gum, or sunflower seeds. Or suck on a drinking straw. Keep your mind busy - Read a book or magazine, listen to some music you love, do a crossword or Sudoku puzzle, or play an online game. Keep your hands busy - Squeeze balls, pencils, or paper clips are good substitutes to satisfy that need for tactile stimulation. Brush your teeth - The just-brushed, clean feeling can help banish cigarette cravings. Drink water - Slowly drink a large glass of water. Not only will it help the craving pass, but staying hydrated helps minimize the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Light something else - Instead of lighting a cigarette, light a candle or some incense. Get active - Go for a walk, do some jumping jacks or pushups, try some yoga stretches, or run around the block. Try to relax - Do something that calms you down, such as taking a warm bath, meditating, reading a book, or practicing deep breathing exercises. Go somewhere smoking is not permitted - Step into a public building, store, mall, coffee shop, or movie theatre, for example.

I am not sure who got you hooked onto sleeping pills. On a longer run they will shrink your brain, resulting in early onset dementia, personality changes, memory changes, even withdrawal seizures. Kindly consult a psychiatrist, get your sleep evaluated, and he will gradually wane you off the sleeping pills and give pills which promote sleep by acting on the cause of sleep disturbance, he may also educate you on sleep hyigiene.

Hello lybrate-user. Here are 15 steps I recommend you to do (worked for me): 1.Do sports (at home, if you feel more comfortable) but 3x Min/week. 2.Desensitize yourself (little by little) by exposing you to some situation that make you uncomfortable/anxious. 3.Start going out of your comfort zone at home: take cold showers. Do it. 4.Eat more greens, oilseeds, fresh fruits and food rich in magnesium such as: raw spinach, fish, beans, lentils, avocados, brown rice, bananas, figs and chocolate. 5.Do a cure of prebiotic and probiotic. Brain and gut are linked. 6.If you have a pet, cuddle with it more often and take care of it. It will make you shift your focus to something else. 7.Try to catch the sun everyday for 10 mins. 8.Check your levels of vit D and B12 (adjust with supplements if needed). 9.Learn how to breathe and cardiac coherence. 10. Yoga, you can find plenty of stuff online. 11. Mindfulness meditation, it’s not hard, stick to it. 12. If you feel anxiety, let it come, don’t fight against it. Take deep breath (inhale for 6 seconds, hold for 2, exhale for 6. Do it again). Instead of reacting with resistance and fear to the sensations, you are going to respond with curiosity and excitement. 13. Sleep enough (7 to 9 hours/night). The earlier you wake up, the better. 14. Quit smoking and avoid drinking alcohol. 15. Smile. Smiling, even for nothing, tricks the mind and releases happy hormones. I want to share with you some of my strategies I developed and wrote about to overcome depression without medication. Art. Creating art I found to be very therapeutic. I would create paintings in my early stage of therapy to release my emotions and express what I was thinking. At the end of the process I had produced a piece of work that now sits on my parents mantel piece and helps me remember the time when I overcame great difficulties. Get rest. Sleeping, particularly in the early stages of depression is necessary for your mind to heal. When I first fell ill I was sleeping a lot, for around about 3 weeks. Sleeping has been scientifically proven to have great benefit and also to help you recover from your ordeal. I wrote a blog about this a while ago to try and help give more clarity on this. The importance of sleeping when healing from depression Keep a journey journal. Every day, when you are awake, try to write how you are feeling, no matter how bad it may seem. Writing it down helps to get it out of your head and also identify when things are not as bad as you previously thought. Some days will be better than others and as you progress through your journey, eventually, you will see a real difference until you no longer need to write any more in your journal. I still keep my journals I wrote in and when I look back at them, I see just how far I have come to where I am today. 5 reasons why you should consider keeping a 'Journey Journal' Set goals, wild crazy goals as well as achievable ‘realist’ ones. All people are goal orientated, fact. No matter what it is, it can be meeting a perfect partner, having large groups of friends, being a great artist, running your own business, setting a meal plan or simply forcing yourself to get out of bed in the morning at a certain time. These are all goals! I encourage you to get a piece of paper (or in the back of your journal) and write out 10 different goals you’d like to achieve. If you are struggling to get up in the morning before 9 am say, maybe one of your goals can be to try to get up for 8: 30 am. Possibly another goal might be to get a shower every day if you have stopped doing that. These small goals can work you towards bigger ones. It is important to dream big too so set your biggest dream goal in action too! So imagine your wildest dream, do you want to be a millionaire? Then set it as a goal. It is achievable but the goal is the first step on the journey towards it. I have also wrote a blog about goal setting here:- The importance of goal setting for depression Exercise. As hard as it may seem, do push yourself to exercise. This should be one of your top goals. Exercising releases natural endorphins and the good news is, you don’t have to go the gym either! You can simply go the park for a long walk (the double effect of being in nature will be of great benefit to you ), or you can use a computer such as the wii fit or xbox 360 with kine ct to train yourself at home. Actually I used a combination of the win fit and walking the family dog on long walks to help stimulate serotonin release in my brain naturally and it did help, plus I was starting to see a difference in my weight and body shape which gave me some more confidence and hope. 9 Reasons why regular exercise is good for depression. Watch motivational videos and films. When I was going through difficulties and I found it hard to motivate myself I would watch motivational videos. There was one in particular that was quite powerful to me about gladiator and how you achieve a good life and one you can be proud of when you look back. In fact, with your question this may well be of benefit for you to watch as well:- Gladiator mindset and inspiration to overcome pain and adversity. Laugh even when you don’t want to. Watch your favorite comedians, things that you know are funny to you. Even force yourself to smile for at least 30 seconds, when you smile you can’t feel sad and it naturally lifts you! Try it now, go on! See how you feel after smiling that long!:) Meditate. I can’t state enough how important meditation is for a peaceful mind. I use guided meditations in an app. Simply look for one in your chosen app store, there are plenty of free versions. It is really good and with regular practice you will find some peace of mind. Assess Relationships. Are all your relationships healthy? Not just love relationships but also friendships? It is sometimes important to detach from people who are causing you distress as sometimes letting go is not only beneficial for you but also to the person you are letting go off. My ex fiancee and I split up and we both lived happier lives afterwards, it also freed me up to pursue my career goals and it did help me to heal from depression, it possible some of your relationships may need careful examination. Seek A Therapy. Lastly but not least, you really need to try different therapies alongside exercising, goal setting, sleeping well and finding motivation. I am not ashamed to say that I have tried over six different therapies before I found the one that worked well for me. In fact it was this reason why I set up a new website that explores every type of therapy available that are known to help with depression called. It is a directory of over 800 specialists that is still growing and you can find hypnotherapists, counsellors, psychotherapists, aromatherapists, mindful experts, reiki, massage, and so much more! For me personally I found hypnotherapy to be of great help but maybe speak to your GP before you access a specialist to see if that therapy would be suitable for you. Seek a therapy - helping you find a local therapist easily Thank You.
