Diabetes is often referred to as diabetes mellitus by physicians, which is used for describing a group of metabolic-related diseases. Diabetic patients have high blood sugar (blood glucose) in the blood, the cause of which might be either the inadequate production of insulin or because the body is unable to use the insulin properly. Diabetes might also be a result of the combination of both.

Types of Diabetes- 

There are three types of diabetes.

  1. Type 1 diabetes which was formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes due to the fact that the symptoms are typically diagnosed in young children and children in their teens. Approximately 10%diabetic patients are Type 1 diabetic where the body is unable to produce insulin.
  2. Type 2 diabetes was also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes or adult onset diabetes, as it occurs mostly in adults. Approximately 90%diabetic patients worldwide are Type 2 diabetic which occurs because the body is unable to produce the required amount of insulin for proper functioning. Overweight and obese people suffering from central obesity or abdominal obesity are more at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than people who have a healthy body weight, as obesity forces the release of chemicals which may destabilize the cardiovascular and metabolic systems of the body. The risks of developing Type 2 diabetes also increases as one grows older.
  3. Another type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which mainly affects pregnant women who have high glucose levels in their blood. The bodies of these women are unable to produce the required amount of insulin to transport all the glucose to their cells leading to the progressive increase of glucose. Studies have revealed that women who have animal fat and cholesterol-rich diet before pregnancy are at more risk of developing this type of diabetes.

Symptoms
Symptoms of diabetes include excessive thirst, dehydration, increased urination and hunger. Symptoms may also include fatigue, skin problems, slow healing wounds, blurred vision and tingling in the feet.  

Solutions

  1. Patients who are afflicted with Type 1 diabetes will have to take insulin injections for life. Proper blood glucose levels have to be maintained throughout by following a strict diet and regular blood tests need to be carried out.
  2. Patients with Type 2 diabetes need to keep their weight in check. They are generally treated with tablets but sometimes insulin injections are recommended. These diabetic patients need to follow a healthy diet strictly, exercise regularly and keep monitoring their blood glucose levels. Another option for obese people to reduce symptoms is Bariatric surgery.
  3. While gestational diabetes can be controlled with proper diet and regular exercise, there are 10 - 20%of diabetics who will need medications to control blood-glucose. Undiagnosed and untreated gestational diabetes raises the risks of complications during childbirth and may result in a baby who is bigger than he / she should be.

Acute complications of diabetes may include hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia while chronic complications may include diseases of the blood vessels which could damage the eyes, nerves, kidneys and the heart. Stretch marks affect men and women equally and are quite normal. Stretch marks occur due to sudden gain or loss in weight, rapid growth, heredity factors, stress and changes in physical conditions in both men and women. Athletes or body builders doing heavy exercises are more likely to get stretch marks due to rapid changes in their body.

Stretch marks are visible stripes or lines that appears in various parts of the body; depending on where the skin tears. The commonly affected body parts are lower abdomen and thighs; however, they can also be seen on arms, buttocks, etc. Pregnancy is one main reason in women for these visible lines on their lower abdomen.

But do not worry! you can get rid of them very easily if you follow these simple yet effective home remedies regularly:

1. Massage with olive oil: olive oil is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients. Regularly massaging your body with warm olive oil will help in improving the blood circulation and reducing those visible stretch marks.

2. Apply egg whites: eggs are a rich source of protein. Whip the whites of two eggs and apply a thick layer of the egg whites over the affected areas. Allow it to dry and then rinse the area with cold water. Finally apply some olive oil on the skin to keep it moisturized.

3. Scrub with coffee powder: gentle scrubbing with coffee helps in lightening stretch marks gradually as it has anti-oxidant properties.

4. Apply a mixture of lemon juice, sugar and glycerine: lemon contains a good amount of citric acid nd sugar is an excellent exfoliating agent. Scrubbing your skin with a coarse mix of lemon juice and sugar can help in removing dead skin and reducing the unsightly appearance of stretch marks on the arms, thighs, etc. You can add a few drops of glycerine to the mixture to keep your skin moisturized.

5. Massage with almond and coconut oil: mix almond and coconut oil and apply this mixture to the affected area regularly. This will significantly help in getting rid of stretch marks.
6. Apply aloe vera gel regularly: regular application of aloe vera gel helps in stimulating cell growth that helps in the reduction of stretch marks. Additionally, its healing and soothing properties keep the skin hydrated, rejuvenated, and glowing.

Ways to prevent and get rid of stretch marks:

1. Maintain a healthy body weight. Consume protein, zinc and vitamin c rich foods in abundance. Green salad, milk, fish, nuts and citrus fruits help a lot in minimizing stretch marks.


2. Keep your body hydrated by increasing fluid intake.


3. Avoid rapid increase or decrease in weight.


4. Plan slow weight gain during pregnancy.


5. Avoid prolong exposure to sun.

Choosing what to do about an unwanted pregnancy can be a very hard decision to make. Thankfully, with the introduction of emergency contraceptives, numerous unwanted pregnancies have been successfully nipped in the bud.
Emergency contraceptives, also called “morning-after pills”, and are relatively new to the medical world, and many of you may be unaware of their usage, advantages, and side-effects. Here are some important questions that may cross your mind when planning to take an emergency pill:

1. When to take an emergency contraceptive? an emergency pill has to be taken orally, within 24-72 hours of unprotected sex. Some pills are advised within 24-48 hours of intercourse, while others can work up to 72 hours.

2. What is its composition? most emergency birth control pills are composed of a progesterone-estrogen combination called ‘levonorgestrel’.

3. How effective is emergency contraception? A majority of the emergency pills have a success rate of 95% if taken within 24 hours. The rate of success decreases with the passage of time after unprotected intercourse. Even though these pills can work up to 72 hours, they should be taken as soon as possible to avoid any risk of pregnancy.

4. How does emergency birth control work? depending on your reproductive cycle, the emergency pill works by delaying ovulation (the release of egg from ovaries)and disrupting the fertilization of the egg with the sperm. It may also prohibit the implantation (attachment) in the uterus, even after fertilization has occurred.

5. Does it protect against sexually transmitted diseases? emergency pills do not protect against the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and hiv. Condoms should always be used to prevent these diseases.

6. How safe are these pills? emergency birth control is a rapid and action-driven process. The dosage is usually strong, and regular usage is strictly not advised. Some pills are absorbed into the system and remain active up to 7 days, while others are never absorbed. The pills are safe if taken in a cautious and responsible manner. 

However, there may be some side effects such as nausea, fatigue, headache and stomach cramps due to hormonal imbalance. Periods may start early or even get delayed.

Remember! emergency contraceptives should not be used as a primary method of contraception. Instead, regular birth control methods like condoms, intra-uterine devices (iuds) etc. Should be considered. Also, these pills do not work if pregnancy has already occurred.

Although emergency pills are effective in a majority of cases, professional consultation along with proper precautions is always advisable. Ensuring proper intake of water and a healthy diet is highly recommended for combating the side effects of emergency contraception.

Slowing the speed of eating help you in lowering down your energy intake and it also suppress your hunger pangs. Slowing eating helps you enjoy your meal and enjoy the taste and flavors of food.

How to eat at the right pace:

  • Portion control: the portion size and obesity moves parallel. If you increase the portion size of your food simultaneously there will be inclination in your weight. Inclination in weight day by day leads to obesity. One of the biggest contributes to obesity is portion size. Don't sample everything on buffet table. The more you have the more you eat.
  • Frequent meals: try to have small and frequent meals in a gap of 2 to 3 hours every day, instead of having a few big ones as this regulates your blood sugar level and your metabolism. This will also keep your hormones balance, keeps your energy level high, improve digestion. If you’re eating healthy whole foods during those small meals, you will be less likely to experience hunger cravings and binges. 
  • Chew food: chewing food properly leads to proper absorption of nutrients.
  • Focus on food: don't watch t. V, use cell phones, etc while eating food. Focus on food so that you eat your food properly, slowly and chew it properly. While watching tv you don't chew food properly and you tend to eat more and sometime you overeat also.
  • Patience: if you have finished food, wait for some time till the body signals brain that it's enough for it. But at times we keep on eating when we are full and tends to overeat. Hence, overeating leads to weight gain.

Hair loss is one of the most common problems being faced today. Though losing 25 to 50 hair strands in a day is normal, sometimes the hair loss can be lot more and rapid causing worry and concern. Here are some simple measures which can help to control hair fall to a good extent.

1. Feed your hair: Have a good balanced diet

Hair requires a good number of vitamins and minerals too.

Vitamin A encourages healthy production of sebum in the scalp and also helps in hair growth. It is found in dark leafy green vegetables, sweet red peppers, mango, papaya etc.

Vitamin B12 found in milk, and milk products, beans etc. is useful for hair growth.

Biotin is very important for hair health. A deficiency of biotin can cause hair fall and hair thinning. So, if you are suffering from hair fall, include foods like dairy products, nuts, green vegetables e.g. cabbage that are rich source of biotin in your regular diet.

2. Give hair their building blocks: Have a protein-rich diet

Proteins are the building blocks of hair. Adequate protein intake promotes hair health and in turn helps curb hair loss. Indulge in a protein-rich diet, which comes in the form of lentils, dried beans, cottage cheese and of course, milk.

3. Hydrate your hair: Have enough water

Keep yourself hydrated. The hair shaft comprises one quarter water, so drink at least eight to twelve glasses of water in a day to stay hydrated and for growth of healthy hair.

4. Pamper your hair: Massage your Scalp with Essential Oils

A scalp massage with essential oil for couple of minutes helps your hair follicles remain active.

Oil can penetrate well within the hair shaft, thereby preventing the hair from losing its moisture. The hair is less likely to suffer damage and stays dense as well as strong. Castor oil especially has excellent hair growth properties and is considered an effective remedy against hair loss.

Warm a little oil for a few minutes. Gently rub it over clean scalp and hair shafts allowing the oil to penetrate.  Leave it on for a few hours, preferably overnight and then wash with a mild shampoo.

5. Nourish your hair: Use hair balms and hair mask

Hair loses moisture quickly. You can use special balms and hair masks to address this problem. Use balm either simultaneously with shampoo or immediately after rinsing it off. The correct way to apply balm is to smear it along the whole length of the hair, while avoiding rubbing it into the skin. Use a good hair mask once in a couple of weeks.

6. Go green : Rub green tea into your hair

Studies have shown that rubbing green tea into hair may help curb hair loss problem. All you need to do is brew two bags of green tea in one cup of water, leave to cool and thereafter, apply it to your hair. Rinse your hair thoroughly after an hour.

7. Keep hair clean: Shampoo regularly

Regular hair washing is a part of preventing hair loss by the way of keeping hair and scalp clean. By doing so, you are lowering the risk of infections and dandruff that may lead to hair breakage or loss.  Do not hesitate to shampoo hair on a regular basis.

8. Do it correct: Shampoo Correctly

Comb your hair thoroughly before washing. The quantity of shampoo to be used depends on the length of your hair. Be careful not to use too much.

Put shampoo onto your palms, and rub them together to whip up the foam. Then apply the shampoo to the roots of your hair. Use massaging movements, making sure to only touch the skin with your soft fingertips (and not with your nails, to avoid causing scratches).

9. Be gentle: Avoid hot water

Hair is a delicate structure. Do not use excessively hot water to wash your hair. Hot water strips your hair of colour and activates the oil-producing glands. Use lukewarm or tepid water which will help dilute the oil glands’ secretions, remove dirt, and improve blood circulation.

It’s best to end with a cool or cold shower. Such a finish will stimulate circulation at the hair roots and make your hair look smooth and shiny.

10. Be tender: Avoid brushing wet hair 

Wet hair is very weak. Brushing wet hair increases chances of hair breakage. If you must comb wet hair, use a very wide-toothed comb. Use your fingers to undo tangles, not a comb or brush. 

11. Know what is bad for hair: Avoid blow drying

If you want to keep hair healthy, you must know how to take care of them. Avoid rubbing your hair dry with a towel. Rather, let hair dry naturally. 

12. Let your Hair Breath: Avoid Smoking 

Smoking reduces the amount of blood that flows to the scalp and this causes a reduction in hair growth. 

13. Vitalize your Hair: Exercise Regularly

Make time for physical activity every day. Walk, swim or bike for 30 minutes a day helps balance hormonal levels, reducing stress levels thereby reducing hair fall. 

14. Keep your hair happy: De-stress yourself

Meditate. Have a good hobby or listen to soft music to reduce stress. 

15. Keep your head sweat free: Use a Bandanna

For men who wear helmet, the sweat accumulates in the pores and weakens hair roots causing hair loss. Wear a cotton bandanna or handkerchief over your hair under the helmet, so the sweat is absorbed and hair breakage prevented.

16. Be hair friendly: Chose a good hair style

WHAT IS DIABETES?

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, or sugar, which are oxidised by our tissues to produce energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, secretes a hormone called insulin. Insulin pumps in glucose from our blood into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood. 

Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. There is no diabetes cure developed so far.

HOW BLOOD SUGAR IS NORMALLY CONTROLLED IN OUR BODY?

The Blood Sugar is tightly regulated between 70 to 110mg/dL in fasting state and 100 to 140mg/dL in post meal state. At any random state Blood Sugar is maintained below 180 mg/dL. This is done by the balanced action of some hormones; some of which tend to increase blood sugar while some tend to decrease.Hormones that increase blood sugar are Glucagon, steroids, Adrenaline, Somatostatin, Thyroid hormones, Growth Hormone etc. 

The only hormone that reduces blood sugar is the INSULIN. Whenever there is a tendency of the blood sugar to rise above the permissible level, Insulin is secreted from the pancreas and the sugar from the blood is pushed inside the cells by insulin and the balance is achieved.

WHAT IS INSULIN?

Insulin is a protein hormone secreted from Pancreas. It is released from pancreas in two patterns.A constant secretion of insulin takes place throughout the day irrespective of meals which ensures that blood sugar in fasting state is under limits. This continuous Insulin secretion pattern is called the BASAL insulin.

On the top of this whenever there is any intake of food, Insulin senses the transient rise in blood sugar and is secreted in a pulsatile manner with each meals to bring down the post meal rise in blood sugar. This pulsatile pattern of Insulin release is called PRANDIAL Insulin.

When the doctors treat patients with insulin, they always try to match the above mentioned pattern of Insulin levels in the blood which is often difficult.

WHAT ARE MY RISKS FOR DEVELOPING DIABETES?

Roughly it can be extrapolated from researches on Diabetic genes that,

  • If your mother is Diabetic: You have 19% chances to develop diabetes
  • If your father is Diabetic: you have 14% chances to develop diabetes
  • If both the parents are Diabetic: You have 25% chances to develop diabetes
  • If your sister or brother is Diabetic: You have 75% chances of developing diabetes
  • If your twin is Diabetic: You have 99% chance of developing diabetes.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF DIABETES?

People who think they might have diabetes must visit a physician for diagnosis. They might have SOME or NONE of the following diabetes symptoms

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme hunger
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Feeling very tired much of the time
  • Very dry skin
  • Sores that are slow to heal
  • More infections than usual.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pains may accompany some of these symptoms in the abrupt onset of insulin-dependent diabetes, now called type 1 diabetes.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF DIABETES?

Type 1 diabetes, which was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes, may account for about 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. 

Type 2 diabetes, which was previously called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes, may account for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. 

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If not treated, it can cause problems for mothers and babies. Gestational diabetes develops in 2% to 10% of all pregnancies but usually disappears when a pregnancy is over. 

Other specific types of diabetes (like diabetes insipidus) resulting from specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses may account for 1% to 5% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR DIABETES?

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include

  • Older age,
  • Obesity,
  • Family history of diabetes,
  • Prior history of gestational diabetes,
  • Impaired glucose tolerance,
  • Physical inactivity, and
  • Race/ethnicity. African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and some Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at particularly high risk for type 2 diabetes.
  • Any history of Polycystic Ovarian Disease in females (PCOD)
  • History of stress 

Risk factors are less well defined for type 1 diabetes than for type 2 diabetes, but autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors are involved in development of this type of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes occurs more frequently in African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and people with a family history of diabetes than in other groups. 

Obesity is one of the associated causes of diabetes with higher risk . Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 35% to 60% chance of developing diabetes in the next 10–20 years. Other specific types of diabetes, which may account for 1% to 5% of all diagnosed cases, result from specific genetic syndromes, surgery, drugs, malnutrition, infections, and other illnesses.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES?

Most of the complications of Diabetes are chronic. High blood Glucose tends to damage numerous enzymes and proteins of our body necessary for important functions and hence many organs are ultimately damaged. We called this as TARGET ORGAN DAMAGE (TOD).

The important target organs are Kidneys (Both), Eyes, Heart, Brain, Nerves and Arteries.

Here are a few terrifying facts regarding Diabetes related complications.

  1. Diabetes is the commonest cause of non-traumatic lower limb amputation.
  2. A diabetic may suffer heart attack without any pain (Silent Myocardial Infarction).
  3. Diabetics suffer heart attack 10 years younger than their peers.
  4. Diabetes aggravates the process of deposition of fats and lipids in arterial walls causing accelerated atherosclerosis resulting in arterial blockade. This sudden arterial blockade may occur in brain circulation causing stroke, in Heart Circulation causing heart Attack or in Peripheral arterial system causing gangrene.
  5. Diabetes affects long and thin nerves of the legs there by causing tingling and results in numb limbs.
  6. Diabetes slowly damages both the kidneys resulting in dependence on Haemodialysis and Renal Transplant.
  7. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness either due to premature cataract or retinopathy.
  8. Most importantly, these complications remain completely asymptomatic in early stage and manifest only at a later stage when options of treatment are limited.
  9. Any infection, ulcer, bacterial infestation, wounds do not heal easily in diabetics not only due to excessive bacterial multiplication but also due to poor quality of tissue which had already been damaged by uncontrolled blood sugar.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED ANY COMPLICATION DUE TO DIABETES?

Usually complications do not alarm you when they start developing. They manifest only when they have already caused considerable irreversible damage.

a. If your eyes are involved:

   i. Dimness of vision

   ii. Frequent eye infections

   iii. Frequent change of spectacles

   iv. Coloured hallows around light

b. If your nerves are involved:

   i. Tingling or numbness of soles of feet

   ii. Instability or sense of imbalance while walking

   iii. Sense of walking over a cotton surface

   iv. Pain and burning sensation of legs

   v. Weakness while getting up from seating position or breaking stairs.

   vi. Slippage of slippers from feet

   vii. Development of painless ulcer over any part of foot especially pressure points.

c. If your Kidneys are involved:

   i. Unintentional weight gain

   ii. Swelling of both lower legs especially early morning

   iii. Decrease in urine output

   iv. Swelling of face and often whole body

   v. Loss of appetite and distaste to food

d. If your heart is involved:

   i. Shortness of breath

   ii. Breathlessness while exertion

To summarise, I would like to convey a very simple message to everybody who is suffering or living with a person of Diabetes that one should be alert, well educated and oriented and never ever disregard the importance of maintenance of optimum control of diabetes. Remember, if diabetes goes out of control, one will never feel any change in their day to day lifestyle but one should be very careful about the payback of the poor control even before the old age sets in. And that is going to hit very hard inside one's mind, pocket and health.

Swine flu, also known as h1n1 influenza, is a type of viral infection that infects the respiratory tract. It spreads really fast and in the same way as any flu from one person to the other. A simple sneeze, cough can spread thousands of viruses through droplets or by touching the contaminated surfaces like books, tables, and door handles etc.

Who is at risk of swine flu?
Children less than 5 years of age, adults over 65 years of age, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes mellitus and people with low immunity

What are the symptoms of swine flu?
You may experience fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny and stuffy nose, tiredness, general body aches or gastric upset like vomiting, diarrhoea. If you have these symptoms for 48 hours, immediately consult a doctor.

How is it diagnosed?
Swine flu can be diagnosed clinically by a doctor by taking a history of the disease and its sign and symptoms. The diagnosis may further be confirmed by laboratory tests as advised by your doctor.

What is the treatment?
Your doctor may give you some medicines which should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of water and other liquids like juices and soups as they will provide you with nutrients. Take lots of rest as it will help you to recover fast.
You can take over the counter painkillers like paracetamol for a headache, muscle ache or a sore throat.
There is no role of vaccination once you have developed the infection.
Some medicines are also available which can be used for the prevention of flu. However, these should be taken only when prescribed by a doctor.

How can swine flu be prevented?
You can prevent swine flu by following some simple day to day measures and also getting vaccinated if needed. Here are some important do’s and don’ts that you should remember:
Do’s
 1. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or handkerchief when you cough or sneeze. Do not reuse them. If you do not have a tissue or handkerchief, use the sleeve or cuff of your shirt.
3. Gargle at least twice a day with warm salt water as the virus will take 2-3 days after initial infection in the nose/throat to grow and show symptoms.
4. Clean your nose at least once every day with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water and blow the nose hard once a day.
5. Take foods rich in vitamin c (like amla, lemon and other citrus fruits). These would help in improving your immunity. Drink warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) often. This may help to wash off the viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive or cause any harm.

Don’ts
1. Avoid touching any part of your face.

What should you know about the swine flu vaccine?
1. Vaccination is generally recommended for people at high risk (as mentioned above).
2. The vaccines are generally available in two variants – a lower dose for children till 35 months of age and higher dose for children above 36 months of age and for adults.
3. If the vaccine is being given for the first time to a person, the doctor may recommend another dose after 4 weeks.
4. It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the vaccine to be effective. So, if you are exposed to flu immediately before or after vaccination, you could still develop the illness.
5. You may need to be vaccinated every year as the type of virus causing swine flu (known as virus strains) can change every year and the protection from this vaccine remains for 6 to 12 months only.
6. This vaccine will not protect you against the common cold, even if some symptoms are similar.
7. If you have bought the vaccine from a pharmacy, try to store it at a temperature of 2 to 8 degree celsius. Do not deep freeze the vaccine.

Have you ever been all comfy and settled in bed only to feel a little itch? You give it a rub or scratch, and before you are content, the sensation returns. So you scratch it again and again as the itching grows and becomes a nuisance.

This is nighttime itching. We scratch a small itch maybe a dozen times a day unconsciously, but how serious is it when you develop itching at night? It may be a temporary reaction to a number of mild causes, or it may a signal an underlying health issue. We will uncover nighttime itching remedies and ways to prevent reoccurrences.

What Causes Nighttime Itching?

Pruritus is the itching of the skin. As with many conditions and illnesses, it seems to become worse at night. You may think it is dry skin, especially if it occurs mainly in the cold winter months when the skin becomes more susceptible due to the lack of moisture in the air. Or you may attribute it to your laundry detergent, new body soap, parasites, or even stress. No matter when or where a headache comes on, you just want the pain to stop. But when it comes to managing and preventing cluster headache, it becomes a real challenge as most of the people are still not clear about this type of headache. One of the most annoying and bothersome types of headache is a cluster headache.

What is a cluster headache? 
A cluster headache is one-sided head pain that may involve tearing of the eyes and a stuffy nose. Attacks occur at regular intervals for 1 week to a longer duration, separated by long pain-free periods that last at least 1 month, possibly longer. The pain occurs on one side of the head. It may be described as burning, sharp and continuous pain. And it may occur in, behind, and around one eye. It may involve one side of the face from neck to temples. It quickly gets worse, peaking within 5 to 10 minutes. The strongest pain may last 30 minutes to 2 hours.

What are the possible causes?
No one knows exactly what causes cluster headaches. However, many experts believe that a cluster headache and migraine headache share a common cause that begins in the nerve that carries sensation from your head to your brain (trigeminal nerve) and ends with the blood vessels that surround your brain. The pain arises in the deep vascular channels in your head (for example, the cavernous sinus) and does not involve the trigeminal system.

Are there any triggers?
Some of the lifestyle triggers that may lead to cluster headache attacks include:
-alcohol and smoking
-high altitudes (trekking, air travel)
-bright light (including sunlight)
-exertion
-heat (hot weather, hot baths)
-foods high in nitrites (such as preserved meats)

What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include:
-swelling under or around the eye (may affect both eyes)
-excessive tearing
-redness in the eyes

Constipation is a word which can scare us to quite an extent. In short we can say that one finds it difficult to discuss the issue and feels embarrassed to even talk about it. Most of the times a person tries to self administer medicines in order to get relief from the constipation bug as he is not willing to talk about it to his family, friends or as for that matter even a doctor. 

But let us face the truth! constipation has become a very common problem nowadays and for some it has been like a daily routine. But what could be the possible reason behind the increase in the number of constipation stricken patients a doctor sees everyday.

 

  • Unfortunately it is nothing but our poor lifestyle which is to be blamed. Poor eating habits, excessive junk consumption, stress, not drinking enough water, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, pregnancy, over eating and not exercising could be some of the reasons.
