Coronary bypass surgery treatment, also known as heart bypass surgery is a form of surgical treatment that is used to treat and replace the blocked or damaged arteries in your heart muscles. It is the coronary arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to our heart muscles, keeping them in good, healthy condition. But if the arteries are blocked due to accumulation of plaque or the blood flow to the heart muscles through these arteries are somehow restricted or reduced, it leads to heart failure. In a coronary bypass surgery treatment, the cardiologist uses healthy blood vessels from any other parts of the body and threads it to your arteries such that the blood bypasses the blocked or obstructed coronary artery and reaches out to your heart. While there are different types of heart bypass surgery, your cardiologist will recommend you to undergo a certain type depending on the severity of your artery blockage. Single bypass surgery is usually recommended if a person has one blocked artery, again, if both the arteries are blocked, then he'll have to undergo double bypass surgery. Triple and quadruple bypass surgeries are suggested if the blockage is in three or four arteries, respectively. Blockage in all four arteries increases your chances of having a heart attack. On an average, time taken for a coronary bypass surgery is 3 -4 hours, but depending on the number of arteries blocked and the level of complexity, the surgery might take longer. Time taken to recover from a coronary bypass surgery is usually 6 - 12 weeks or more, depending on your condition. During this span of time, you should stay on a restricted diet, avoid any kind of heavy exertion and limit physiacl activity as much as possible.
